Anyone ever volunteer at a festival?

If so, how was it? My girlfriend just bought us discounted-admission volunteer tickets for summer camp next month. I'm not sure how I feel about it. On the one hand if you have to work somewhere, where better than a music festival for a couple days? But on the other hand she's never been to a festival and underestimates how much we're going to want to sleep-in the night after an all-night rave.
So who has done the work-trade thing before at a music festival? How was it?

I've considered this too and am looking forward for any feedback. How much cheaper were your tickets if you don't mind me asking ? That might put a few things into perspective.
I was at summer-camp at 2011, I don't really remember seeing to many volunteers, besides maybe at the gate to check people in.

Summercamp fucked my life hard. I got popped there. Most people are assholes in the pub and would just comment that I was being an idiot (and I was) to get caught but just tread carefully there. I has a lot of good times at summercamps past but every year I saw the place get a little less communal and a little more dirty, heartless party scene. The entire jail and court system organize their sentencing around arrests for those three days. They were extraditing people from as far as New York to serve days for fighting against unwanted medical attention

Well tickets are normally $215 as of right now. The work tickets are $15 but you need to come to three 5 hour work sessions. If you miss any of your shifts, you get charged $200. So if you go and work you save a couple hundred bucks, if don't like your shift because you can't work with your buddies or see your fav show, they just charge you the same price it would have cost if you bought the regular admission ticket. I don't know, it could be fun...
All I know is half the time I go to a music fest I leave half way through the last day because I'm too dirty and exhausted to sleep in my tent again. I think the last thing I'm going to want to do the next day tear down tents and stages. But who knows maybe it will be super fun and I'll feel better about the whole weekend after helping out!

I volunteered at Summer Camp last year. It was alright, kind of annoying and boring sometimes when everyone else is going wild and you're sitting around doing nothing at a shift but pretty worth it for the amount of music I saw/money I saved.
Your shifts can be anything from sitting around guarding a golf cart path from people walking down it to watching for kids trying to sneak in the perimeter to scanning people's wristbands at the entrance or you may end up being backstage security for any variety of shows. It all just depends on where they put you and when your shifts are. It's pretty chill honestly.
Last year I watched the perimeter while smoking blunts the first night. Second day watched a golf cart path at the Medeski, Martin, & Wood show while smoking blunts. The third day I was unfortunately watching a cart path away from everything during the last Umphrey's show while my friend was over there doing backstage security. So overall it's really chill and you can get some sweets jobs if you're lucky.

QFT. But lounging in the lounge chair outside the tent for a few hours before doing things is priceless!

Man the last festival I went to I didn't sleep but 15 minutes the entire time I was there
Thanks for all the well wishers guys. Yeah things are turning around pretty good. The summercamp arrest was years ago. I did jail, I did probation, and then I did something far more restricting...I did school. Probation is coming to an end next month (been over 5 years I've been on). I'm also graduating. Life goes on, but there's still that undeniable fact that forever I'll have a felony on my head because I got a little too drunk on my birthday and got popped.

its funny when you get that little sleep at a festival, you sit down after all the craziness just for a minute then all of a sudden your waking up hours later and achy as hell cuz u just slept in the most uncomfortable position ever

The past two festivals I've been at, the only sleep I got was immediately after blowing a few lines of molly. I'm not an mdma buff so its likely it couldve been mephedrone or something else. I just know that when it's in my sinuses I get all wiggly and can crash, but 15-30 mins later I wake up sweating balls with my heart roaring

I did volunteer security a couple of years for this one festival a couple of years. Pretty easy, just shit like standing at the exit of a beer tent and telling people not to bring beer out. They had some people who just ferried stuff around in buggies and that sounded pretty fun.

the worst is when you see kids who fell asleep in the sun and are on the verge of sun poisoning

yeah the golf cart job would be sweet. This guy had a blast chauffeuring artists around in the mud.

Yes! I actually grew up around there and moved away. When I heard they were throwing a festival like that there I knew it was recipe for disaster. There's tons of smaller bluegrass fests there that are super chill, and Asheville like 2 hours away has big festivals and the whole scene there is really cool.
As far as volunteering I say go for it, I volunteered at wake and got my 15 hours in on the first night. Just directing cars.. They forgot about me and no one came to pick me up until after I had been working 15 hrs.
Itwas a blast, tons of people came to smoke me out, I got dosed, the only shittty part was a lot of really sexy ladies kept coming and talking to me and asking if I'd come back and party at their camp but I could not leave my post unmanned or else I had to pay full price on my tix.
Some of my friends got backstage a few places because they just flashed their volunteer wristband and hadon. The volunteer shirt, and just acted like they were supposed to be there.
The people who ran the volunteer thing were the coolest people too, they said if you get bored to just roll up a doob
Fun times.

Oh yeah I got a quarter of the best weed I've ever smoked for $40 from this awesome dude who was giving the volunteers the hookup.
