Can you trust bitrates?
    #1988793 - 10/08/03 01:36 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I had a cd of some mp3's that I downloaded before I was worried about what the bitrate of mp3's was. Some of these files were 128kbps. I'm sure of it.

I ripped four tracks from this cd so that I could put the songs with other collections of mine.

After the tracks were back on my hard drive, I played them. Each song now has a bitrate of 160, which is the bitrate my Music Match Jukebox rips files.

I don't think these tracks were all 160kbps originally, but if someone were to download those tracks from me, it would appear is if they are higher quality files than they actually are.

So are the files that you download as high quality as you think they are?

Not from kazaa or any other public file sharing service.

The true test of quality is the size of the file.. good quality albums are usually 50-100 MB. (5-10 megs per song)

with out a doubt there are many songs on kazaa that have been rencoded over many times.

I don't trust pirates, I'll tell ya that. But if it was burned onto an audio cd & re-ripped, the quality would suffer. It's the variable bitrate ones that trip me out-

Only trust the bitrate of the first encoding. If you burn and rip it again at a higher rate, you are just getting a high-fidelity copy of the errors from the first encoding. As far as your codec is concerned those are part of the song.
