Goodbye iceberg lettuce

I just had a salad using coleslaw mix, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, feta cheese and a Special K knockoff for crouton-ish substitute.
I think I'm going to be using coleslaw mix for salads from now on. It's cheap as hell; I used a 1/3 of the $1.48 bag. It is also nicely shredded for hassle free eating. It also has more dietary fiber and a wonderful crunch.
On a sidenote, a pipe broke outside the door of the geology lab today. Black water came gushing down in a waterfall. We escaped through the windows. It was epic, but I wished it wasn't the one morning I wasn't baked.

Yea my local supermarket brand (Publix) coleslaw mix is super cheap and I make all sorts of dank salads with it.
My favorite thing to do with it is make a simple olive oil, sherry vinegar, salt & pepper slaw. Then use it to top a hot pastrami and havarti cheese sandwich. Along with a couple cold slices of tomato.

Funny you say that because I just had an all iceberg lettuce salad with only oil, plain vinegar, and salt.
I also drank the leftover vinegar and oil mix like a weirdo.

That's not weird. That might be one of the sanest things I've ever read here lol. Or maybe I'm just a weirdo too.

Well, there's at least 4 of us that do that then. It's too delicious not to.
I've also tried lime juice on my salads (and almost everything else). It's kinda awesome.
I'll have a look for that spring mix next time I'm in Kroger.

Olive oil on salad is gooooooood shit
Yea that baby spring mix has a lot of crunch to it, its very very good salad, its also a HUGE tub for 4$
Its a lot of bang for your buck, you could easily make 30 big salads with that tub. I Highly recommend

I was starting to get a bit scared when everyone in here including myself were getting excited talking about salads.
It's time to go grill a rib-eye so I can wash out all this vegan talk out of my mouth lol.

You shouldn't eat iceberg lettuce. There's NO nutrients in it. It's basically just crunchy water. It was invented in order to make cows weigh more due to water weight.
Eat romaine lettuce instead. I buy the individual heads that are out in the open in the produce section. 99 cents per head. It's way cheaper than the pre-bagged crap. Maybe a dollar fifty at the most. They are HUUUUGE compared the shit that is already in bags. The crap that comes in bags gets smaller and smaller and the prices keep going up.
The only downside is that you have to wash it and cut it yourself but for the price, you really can't beat it.

I personally love iceberg lettuce. Gives the perfect crunch to a sandwhich or burger without being over powering.

I'm gonna think about this every time I eat iceberg lettuce from now on.
And I normally get romaine or spring mix. Sometimes I'll get kale or something and mix my salad myself. I like to make awesome fully loaded salads, like warm potato and mushroom salads with chickpeas and carrots and all sorts of stuff - the only dressing I use is a tiny bit of extra virgin olive oil. You can totally turn a salad into a delicious filling meal.

I agree that Romaine is a lot better for you and tastes better but the price here must be different. Iceberg is around $1 a pound while Romaine is $3 to 4/lb which is a crazy amount of money for lettuce.

Yea that sounds like a great salad. I don't know about the banana in there though.
The point of this thread was that you can get like a 2 pound bag of coleslaw mix and make some amazing salads for less than 50 cents a serving.
Your avocado and spinach alone are already around 3 dollars just for one serving.
I need to start growing my own avocados. They are way too expensive nowadays. The weekly farmer's market is about to open in 30 minutes here. Hopefully they'll be cheaper than 2 bux a piece this week.

I know it sounds crazy but the banana is what ties it together. You wouldn't believe how good a salt and vinegary banana is. Anyway the point of this salad is that it can function as a meal.
