Misting Casings
    #1988026 - 10/07/03 09:45 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

My friend has two casings going. One is a maza on popcorn (4 half pints cased with straight verm) and the second is a rescued transkei (2 brf cased with straight verm). My friend hasn't been misting the terrarium. He has been fanning as often as possible and is using a beaker with water & perlite for humidification. Should he mist the casings directly? Or mist the insides of the terrarium at all? He says he's plucked a few adults off already (the maza casing) and is wondering if he should just mist and wait for more pins or dunk immediately and re-fruit? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

I would mist until the mycelium comes through the top of the casings. Keep the casings moist, you can tell depending on the medium color if they are drying out. Once mycelium is poking through don't mist them directly you'll damage the mycelium. Just mist in the air above the terrarium prior to putting the lid back on.

I usually just spray the sides of the bin and a little into the air so it falls onto the casing. Just me. I recommend only misting to the point where the casing doesn't dry out -- no more.

In my experience I have to contradict stupaod a little.
If I mist a already surfaced piece of mycleium too heavily it is more likely to go hard and thus build overlay.
I propose to mist really nicely (till it nearly builds puddles), yet from at least 20 cm away from the casing, on the first 2 (max 3) days after having put the casing layer on. Do this AFTER having covered up the out-poking mycelium.
Then only mist realy lightly , and only when necessary. If your humidity is high enough constantly there will basically be no need to mist the casing directly, but just the air of your setup after fanning.
If you do need to mist do so only slightly and never till it's soaked.
You should try and restrain from misting pins directly in my experience.
