Hmmmm....

Damnit. It's been more than a month and my ONE jar has not fully colonized. For the first 4 weeks(!) of colonization the jar was sitting happily behind my VCR at a good house temp of around 75-70 degrees. Then, just recently I moved it into a dark dark closet w/ a heating pad with a towel on top of it and a small rag wrapped around the jar. Still, no increments in mycelial growth. What am I to do? Should I take out the half-colonized cake and remove the extra verm+brf substrate, or wait and see what happens?

does the jar have air exchange? if not that can cause a jar to stall in that way.

no i guess it doesnt. the lid is tightened all the way. i flip the jar over constantly cause i heard this can spread some air around in there.

Taking off the tape and flipping the jars should speed colonization. Try getting them to around 85 degrees as well. Shouldn't take more than 3 weeks with these parameters......

Light is bad for growing mycelia, it induces pinning. Like Newspore said, try and get your temps. up to 85 or so. I think darkness and temps are the first thing you need to worry about.

Yeah, I know light is bad, thats why I have it in my closet.
temp is pretty good (around 85 - 90 ) as it's on a heating pad.

Cakes usually won't pin until fully colonized. Light shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Take the tape off. Stalled jars need air. If you have a verm layer, you're good to go. It will stay sterile. It is so colonized already, most contams won't stand a chance.
