Hpoo/straw question
    #19873083 - 04/20/14 09:40 AM (10 years, 8 months ago)

Hello!

I pasteurized 21 cups of some good quality Horse Manure last night following RR's video. Other than the fact that the jars stayed 170 degrees Fahrenheit for the first ~30 minutes or so... I did it exactly.
10% Vermiculite and 5% gypsum by volume mixed with he Hpoo.

Then I did my straw. I washed it in the soapy bath w/ hot tap water for ~4 hours. I hope the fact that it was in for twice as long is okay. I left the house and had been gone for longer than I expected to be. After draining I put some of the straw in a 22 qt. stock pot and 4 gallons of water. with just a bit less than 1/2 cup of hydrated lime. Once it came to 160 degrees Fahrenheit, I took it off the heat, and let it sit, where it stayed for just over an hour...~ 70 - 75 minutes. I took it out of the pot afterward into a pillow case to drain where I squeezed and drained in then left it on a rack over night.

Is all this correct? or Viable and successful pasteurization?

Finally I want to mix these two to make one Hpoo/straw substrate. Its all cooled over night at about ~8 hours since last night.

Should I mix the two?
Or must they be done together when pasteurizing?
If so, what ratio should I mix them in?

170 is higher than I am comfortable with for hpoo. I know others have done it that way in the past with success but, for me hpoo always contamed if I let it go over 165 for more than a few minutes.

I took it off the heat when it hit 160 inside the jar. It remained at 170 after. I didn't know it would get that much hotter.

What about the mixture of the straw and hpoo?

Well I can only speak for myself but, if my hpoo got that hot I would dry it out for a few days and start over. Like I said before, I know others have gotten away with it, but I haven't. As for mixing it, I wouldn't mix one properly pasteurized sub with another one that got too hot. Again this is something I never really tried. You might get away with it but if it was me, I'd start over  I don't really know much about straw as I have only used it once so maybe someone else can give you a better answer.

Next time, reduce the heat when the temp reaches 130F, since it will continue to ramp up.  For pasteurization of manure and straw, compost, etc., the closer you can keep the temp to 140F/60C the better.  Try not to allow the temp to exceed 160F at any time, so you were already over temp when you first reduced heat. It's going to be more likely to contaminate at this point so i'd opt to start over

I just pasteurised hpoo for the first time. I turned off the heat at 130 but it climbed to 165. I was shitting bricks hoping it wouldn't get any higher.

can the HPoo and straw be pasteurized together? Say in a 55gal barrel. If so should have be hydrated to field capacity and submerged in a watertight bag, or should it all get submerged in a mesh bag and then strained?

I'd do the straw in a mesh bag (or pillow case) and strain but do the hpoo hydrated to field capacity in a separate sealed plastic bag.  You don't want to leach all the nutrition out of the hpoo.

Make sure you get all the air out of the plastic bag so it will be easier to submerge.  I use a bag in a bag to be extra safe.

You can pasteurize the straw in the pillow case and hpoo in plastic bag together.  Use a clean brick or weight to keep all the sub submerged in the water.
