What was the first one that reminded you of seafood? You've got a delicious case of pareidolia going on.

Yeah, I loves me some seafood. Especially when I get it myself.
Once the spines are removed from seas urchins, they look very much like Astrophytums. I've always held a view that nature imitates itself throughout the plant and animal kingdoms. I see similarities all the time. One of the things that keeps me interested in nature and the plant/mushroom world is discovering these similarities.

Don't mean to bust your balls but those are all succulents
Succulents lack areoles. Areaoles is what makes a cactus.

Being a "succulent" is more describing a mode of action than a type of plant. Succulents are plants that tend to store water, cactus included. Cactus are in their own category entirely because they have areoles.

I would disagree with "describing a mode of action more than a type of plant", but the rest of this is correct. The word succulent in a botanical sense definitely describes a type of plant, one that specifically stores water in fleshy leaves, stems, or roots.
A cactus is a member of the Cactaceae family which have several characteristic features including aeroles like you mentioned.
Succulents are plants that store water like agaves, yucca, and cacti among others. Cacti are members of a specific plant family.

The mode of action I was referring to IS the storing of water in fleshy leaves, stems, or roots.
Once again you "disagree" with me when we're essentially saying the exact same thing.

Secondly, I actually stole pretty much those exact words from a horticulture teacher I had when someone asked about the whole "all cactus are succulents but not all succulents are cacti" thing.
