Backdoor removal

I hope you can get rid of it. Are you running any anti-virus software?
The above link tells how to get rid of it using Norton.

I would agree with the reformat the hard drive comment. But since the price of new hard drives has fallen so much, why not get youself a new one and try to salvage any of your saveable files from your infected drive after updating a quality virus program on your new drive.

What OS are you running?

First: system32.exe is not a standard part of microsoft windows (at least from win2k up, donno about 95/98/me). There is a system32 folder which is part of windows, but the .exe is not.

You cannot delete a file if it is open or in use.

Start by booting into safe mode by hitting F8 as soon as windows starts to load. Choose 'safe mode' and let her rip.

After safe mode comes up, try to delete the file.

I would also run regedit (start->run, type regedit) and look through the following keyspace:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

for anything with a value of system32.exe (not system32 without the .exe, very very important!!) and delete those values. You can also do a search in regedit for "system32.exe" and delete any values that you find.

I am a firm follower of the "reinstall after infection" clan, which is my real recommendation.. but the above might help.

dude, system32.exe is NOT a real file. So just go into dos and delete. If you aren't running 98 or 95, then just install win98 as a secondary OS and delete the file there. BTW, it's always good to have a second OS just in case something like this happens.

> system32.exe is NOT a real file.

So if the file isn't real, they why must it be deleted? The file is real, but is not part of Micro$oft Windows. Instead, it is part of a virus.

> So just go into dos and delete

I am running ntfs and DOS, win95, win98, and winme cannot read the filesystem.

> it's always good to have a second OS just in case something like this happens.

Booting from CD and running the recovery console usually works fine for me and I don't have to pay M$ twice for shitty software.
