The New Rebel
    #1986508 - 10/07/03 12:16 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I love quotes. I thought this one is very interesting, as I've known people like this.
--------------
The new rebel is the sceptic and will not entirely trust anything. He has no loyalty, therefore he can never be a true revolutionist, and the fact that he doubts everything gets in his way when he wants to denounce anything, for all denunciation implies a moral doctrine of some kind, and the moral revolutionist doubts not only the institution he denounces but the doctrine by which he denounces it. Thus he writes one book complaining that imperial oppression insults the purity of women, then he writes another book, a novel, in which he insults it himself. He curses the Sultan because Christian girls lose their virginity, then curses Mrs. Grundy because they keep it. As a politician he cries out that war is a waste of life, then as a philosopher that all life is a waste of time. A Russian pessimist will denounce a policeman for killing a peasant, then prove by the highest philosophical principles that the peasant ought to have killed himself. A man denounces marriage as a lie and then denounces aristocratic profligates for treating it as a lie. He calls the flag a bobble, then blames the oppressors of Poland or Ireland because they take away that bobble. The man of this school goes to a political meeting where he complains that savages are treated as if they were beasts, then he takes his hat and umbrella, goes along to a scientific meeting where he proves that they practically are beasts. In short, the modern revolutionist, being an infinite sceptic, is always engaged in undermining his own mines. In his book on politics he attacks men for trampling on morality, in his book on ethics he attacks morality for trampling on men. Therefore the modern man in revolt has become practically useless for all purposes of revolt. By rebelling against everything he has lost his right to rebel against anything.

G. K. Chesterton

No... this man just has so much to revolt against that there is a tendency for him to become apathetic and then revert to his cave of selfishness.
Some are able to overcome this apathy with real action.

It has always been this way. Only the frontiers change.

That is awesome catalyst, I feel like i've thought about that issue alot but that's the first time I've seen it in words.

I agree with Sclorch, I think

There's always a heap of b.s. to work through, but it's just a matter of time before mind meets matter which in turn awakens action... if that makes any sense.

I've known people who are skeptical about everything, that's why I thought this was an interesting passage...

an infinate skeptic.

"Be the light you wish to see in the world."

Indeed. Like Dave M. said "We need the light of love in this place"

I was going to say something towards that end.. participating here takes some sort of active effort. If you can't play with the big boys, take a walk over to OTD...
Peace.

"Be the light you wish to see in the world."

That sounds good to me, but some people might be really skeptical about living their lives based on a simple idea like that. It implies that all situations can stem from this one concept. you could be selling yourself pretty short.
uh..... huh.

That's a good point, grav. It's not really that simple, is it?

I try to love others and spread light, but it's much more complex than that.

I guess my most basic rules for myself in this life are:

1.Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you

2.Always think of the repercussions before saying or doing anything(which I admit is difficult)

I'd say,
for everything you do, ask yourself if you would feel proud about it as your life was ending.
