Quick question, freezing/refreezing
    #19844205 - 04/14/14 03:33 PM (9 years, 9 months ago)

I have some shrooms that I've been keeping frozen. I'm making a trip down to see a friend next weekend, was wondering if I took the bag out for a few days and then put it back into the freezer would this be a bad idea? Freezing and then thawing and re-freezing for food is not a good idea so I'm wonder if this goes for mushrooms as well.

Thanks guys :sun:

Are they wet or dry?

Dry, they've already been in the freezer for a few months.

Then not a problem.
Keep them in their original bag/container to prevent any condensation from getting them wet as they warm.

Thawing and refreezing food is mostly bad due to ice crystal formation in the wet food.
Dry foods don't have this problem.

I always recommend against freezing shrooms, and especially against refreezing. Dry is not going to be as big of a problem, but with freezing and thawing you must always worry about condensation. I am certainly no expert on this, but it stands to reason that if you freeze some dry mushrooms without airtight protection then they will inevitably grow some ice crystals. By itself this would only be a mild problem, but when you thaw those shrooms you are now going to have reconstituted psilocybes. Reconstituting edibles is sometimes fine depending on the species, but we're talking about active chemicals here. Plus they were frozen, which makes the whole situation worse (freezing fungi doesn't work the same way as freezing meat or veggies). This just sounds bad all around.
As a rule of thumb, it is never a good idea to freeze mushrooms (psychedelic OR edible).
Dry freezing would be fine, but that's really going the extra mile.
I say your best bet is to keep them frozen until you intend to eat them. As I said, dried frozen mushrooms should be fine, but they really ought to stay frozen until ingestion to ensure max potency. It would be ideal if you could transfer them to a cooler with ice.

On the other hand, if they are really extra dry, and rolled tightly in some kind of packaging (even if it's not airtight), they might just thaw to a relatively dry state (instead of a soft mushy rotten mess) and be perfectly fine to transport without any extra measures.

Good Luck!

Ice crystals wont form if the mushrooms are dry.
Freezer air is low in humidity and can be used to dehydrate things, this dehydration process is part of what causes freezer burn.
I've frozen and unfrozen dried mushies many times without a problem.

Noted.
That's one for the records

I disagree that ice crystals won't form (humidity is fluid--the moisture would necessarily be external), but I take your word for it that frozen dried shrooms are ok. I have no experience with this.

More input would be appreciated.

Thanks to both of you, I used a dehydrator to dry them first; then I put them in a ziplock bag with some dissecent stuff (spelt wrong) for some time before I put them in the freezer. The disscent stuff was put into tea bags so they wouldn't be touching the mushrooms; everything was bone dry before the freezer.

I did have worries about refreezing them in terms of potency loss, I'm defiantly not educated enough to state this as fact but I really don't think it should effect potency to refreeze it again; no more than what would be naturally lost over time. These mushrooms are probably somewhere close to a year old by now, they actually were dry for I'm guessing 2-4 months before I put them into the freezer. I think I'll split the bag into two and just bring an appropriate amount with me.

That might be the safest bet.
