Subs or something?

I found these growing in a public native reserve at a local park. They were growing under these small plants from the dirt in and around wood chips and bits of branches.
They started bruising green at the edge of the caps. I am in New Zealand, North Island, East Coast.
I am making a spore print but I think the spores are black. (One of the caps growing under another has black spores on it) Here I am hoping lol.

There were dead ones around which were turning into black goo:

Here's the green bruising:

Yep. Subs or something really close to that in the genus Psilocybe

i would say Psilocybe subaeruginosa
given you you are in NZ they may be a Psilocybe "something" though, but damn they look like fresh subs.
Excellent find.

exposure of psilocybin to oxygen cause the blue oxidation reaction.
as the mushrooms age they get bumped, munched, knocked around, and will turn blue where this has happened. when fresh they have little bluing.
just make sure that they do in fact all turn blue, by squeezing the stems or pressing on the gills.

Well most of them are turning green on the cap. I wouldn't call it blue. I only took home that bunch in my hand but there was like 3 times as many there plus about 2 times as many of them dying/dead.

They sure look a lot like Psilocybe azurescens, it would be cool to get some full genome sequencing done and see how the dna really is all arranged....The ITS gene is just one base pair different between the two species, and the LSU locus is identical.

Azurescens hasn't been found in NZ has it? What kinda microscope can be used to observe spores? What magnification.

you can view them with a 400x, but oil immersion is preferred to accurately measure and view spores/basidia/cystidia, etc... not doubting your capabilities, but someone who has experience with Psilocybe under the scope should look at this collection...

you need to dry whole specimens... maybe you should save "this collection" and go back for more... that's what i would do.
send some to Alan, inski and TimmiT...
send a print or 2 to a cultivator...
just a thought...
