supplementation / experements
    #1984472 - 10/06/03 07:04 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

So I'm about to start cultivating, and in preparation for this I have been collecting various different substrates/supplements to play around with after I have a few BRF cakes under my belt. however, I've been thinking about supplementing my first (maybe second or half of first) with some ground up TVP, or textured vegetable protein.

I've heard several people on the boards talking about supplementation with protiens and tryptamine precursors, and frankly was rather interested. so, when i picked up a couple pounds of BR, I also got a small baggie of TVP.

has anyone tried this?

was contamination significantly more of an issue?

on a more experimental note, I also have some crushed hazelnut (also called filbert) shells that I will be experimenting with at a later date.. I got them free from a friend, so i figured why not. (I'll be sure to share my results.)

By the way, if anyone has a spore print that they wouldn't mind parting with, I'll be remembering you later.   (I've allways prefered sharing anyway. =)

There are lots of threads on this subject. Use the search engine.
BUT.....
I wouldn't worry about all that right now. Just get lots of cakes grown first, then(maybe) experiment with this stuff.

If your looking for prints, I would suggest the Marketplace forum.

I did look up TVP, and only returned one result, which I had allready been through.

also, please don't assume that a first poster is a complete novice, or that I am here simply for the purposes of a good high. quite frankly, I'm mainly interested in psilocybin bearing fungi because the body of knowledge on their cultivation is so large and diverse. I've also been lurking the newsgroups, and a multitude of BB's on this subject for about 10 months now. (apologies if I sound bitchy.. i was just expecting the "your a novice- play with a cake" line and wasen't so interested.)

What I would do if I were you is try some straight bulk materials first.  Like straw or woodchips/sawdust.  Then you can try to supplement after a few runs of those.  BTW how were you going to judge if it is any better if you haven't already grew it straight .
As far as the TVP I don't think it would work as a supplement.  TVP may be pprocessed to much from the start to be of benifit.  It may hind growth.  Supplement the wood chips/sawdust with things like bran (any flavor).  Be careful of contaminants once you supplement as they will benifit from it also.

Ok?....my bad. My statement wasn't based on your number of posts it was based on the fact that you said you were "about to start cultivating".
There is a big difference in knowing how to do it, and having done it a million times.
Also my statement "There are lots of threads on this subject. Use the search engine" was for supplementation in general.
If your looking for super potent psilocybes, then just set up a lab and synth.

bonsai- thanks for the input-

this is what else has been said about TVP, i was just hoping to get a bit deeper than this:

I once made wheat spawn ammended with a fraction of TVP (Textured vegetable protein)(made from soy) - worked wonderfully - the density and vigour of the mycelium was second only to the time i saw some on rabbit shit w/ wheat straw - In both cases the density and satin sheen of the mycelium made it look more like one of its woodloving cousins than the regular sort.  ~mycena

also, this is the nutritional profile of TVP:
Serving Size 1/4 cup (24g)
Servings Per Container 11.00
Calories 80.00
Calories from Fat 0.00
Total Fat 0.00g
Saturated Fat 0.00g
Cholesterol 0.00mg
Sodium 2.00mg
Total Carbohydrate 7.00g
Dietary Fiber 4.00g
Sugars 3.00g
Protein 12.00g
Ingredients Soy flour

(I was planning on grinding it to a flour when i get around to it)

like I said though, I'm a lot more interested in the science of it rather than putting out a lot of product. (I'll be doing that too, but thats not the part that I really enjoy  )

*edit* okay, so not "product"... call it gifts =)

"putting out a lot of product. "

 no help from me if this is what it sounds like (i.e. sales-related)

heheh, awesome, thats the kind of discussion I was hoping for!

I decided a long time ago that if I was going to be cultivating that I was going to be doing it the right way instead of just frustrating myself with bad practices and hokey equipment. (not to say that I went out and dropped 2 Grand on a lab or something, just that i was too poor at the time to get things going the right way.)

anyway, I was lucky and allready had a PC'er around the house. I've got an awesome incubator setup that I've gotten to stabilize at 75˚ (thats 75 degrees if the char-map screws up) without heating the room itself... and a terarium will be ready in probibly a week or so... so yeah.

what I was trying to imply though was that I was hoping for a mental discussion on par with where my knowledge is, no necissarily with where my phisical experiences are. muchos gracias for turning things around a bit. =)

I don't have any intentions to be selling shirley knott, I just have a lot of friends that every time I bring up my interest in fungi, they tell me that I should send some of the magic ones their way... so yes, a lot of stuff, but not "product" like you took it. I'm anti-consumer aswell. I'll be likely giving it away.

Schorts -- what are you trying to do?  You can fill a tub with mushrooms without supplements.  They do pretty well on their own

You sound like you have the right idea, but if this is your first (or second) time growing, there are a lot of other more important factors that come into play than supplementation.  Giving it too many supplements can make it more prone to contaminate after casing or birthing, and th C:N ratio (which should be around 10:! to 17:1, the latter extreme if using bulk) will also determine the outcome.  Too rich a substrate isn't always a good thing.

As far as pure protien supplements, an essential amino acid mix really helps with agar, but when it comes to substrate you just need a good, healthy substrate that is good to case.  Your ability to case determines your yield.
