bleaching contam jars and straw question
    #1984069 - 10/06/03 04:16 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

what is the minimum time this bleach/water bath will take? I've heard no more than 6 hours to prevent nasty residue but not sure what the minimum is?

Also not related, but in the straw bails, there are some seed pods and also like a brownish husk from the yellow hay, is that okay to use or should the good pieces be picked out?

You've got to get all the earse (I think that's the word in english) of, before pasteurising.
The ears are likely to contam. I tried hay once (containing gras and straw), and it didnt colonise very well, and contamed after two weeks.

Cocnerning contamned jars:
I only put them into hot water and fairy for a day. They never contamned afterwards.

all my foaf did for contamd jars was wash them in bleach water till everything (residue) was gone and then PC'd them with substrate and no re-contams

it's more like brown dried grass. those seed pods are there, just not like that dark brown.

Well let me put it this way:
Pressure cooking is to destroy endo-contamns. So, if you can kill those , why wouldnt it kill normal ones just sitting on the surface of the jar?

Fairy is a liquid antibacterial-soap.

so you're saying that it is not neccesary to take extra precaution in bleaching jars since they are going to be pressure cooked anyway?

Sorry for the late answer, but yeah that's what Im saying!

I havent had any problems with contamns since about 1.5 years back on one of my first grows and let's say this: I dont use hydrogen-peroxide, nor do I innoculate over the oven, nor do I have a glovebox and I dont nuke my casing material. Am I just lucky? I dont know,
But in any case I wouldnt consider not bleaching being sloppy.
