Your opinion: Noc it up or g2g for hobbyist?
    #19838397 - 04/13/14 03:07 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

I've done enough PF cakes and decided am moving on to grain. Something I've been wondering tho... Via g2g transfers, it seems you can basically turn 1 jar into 10. So, for the small time hobbyist grower, would you recommend knocking up 10 jars with a syringe, or knock up 1 jar and get your 9 or 10 others through g2g?

You'd have to wait longer for the others to colonize if doing g2g, but you'd save 9/10ths of your syringe as well. And I have no need to knock up 10 jars and g2g them all to make 100 or anything, that'd just be overkill.

Seems like if I have the patience, the way to go is save my syringe, and use g2g to multiply my spawn, but I'd like to hear the opinions of the grain buffs who've been doing this for a while. Cheers

Noc up 10 with a syringe.

spawn 8 to bulk when done.  take the other two to 20 more jars while your tubs are growing.

then take those 18 to tubs, and use two to make 20 more jars FTW:zaphod:

That does sound like winning. But there's a limit to this right? It won't continue infinitely, around the 3rd transfer the jars will start failing. Still, that's a hell of a good idea and exactly what I'll do.

Run it till the wheels fall off. You'll likely get way more than 3 generations out before it starts to get shitty and by then you'll be working with agar anyway.

My goal is bulk, bulk, bulk. I've read a lot, and know the many advantages of agar, but do you think it's any more efficient than grains? I have a limited amount of space, and g2gs seems like it could keep me busy till the end of time.

Just knock up 10 jars right now. there is no sense in saving spores one good harvest and you will have all the spores you will ever need. Even if you don't plan on isolating or cloning on agar its still handy for inoculating future jars after you start taking spore prints. Putting spores on agar and inoculating with it is a lot safer than making spore syringes. Yah G2G rocks to.

agar wedge to grain=master, then grain to grain

I'm not sure if that's true.
I've done g2g's many many times before having to start my culture over again.

take some clones off your first harvest while you keep g2g'ing the multi-spores from the syringe.

you really will never run out.

Eventually senescence will kick in. The cells can only divide so many times before they ware out. The amount of time that passes between transfers also plays a role you can spread things further by making more transfers early on while the mycelium is still young.

You're going to have spores to spare soon, I don't think anyone does g2gs just to save on spores. The real benefit to g2gs is saving space because your jars are freed up sooner. It wouldn't be beneficial to PC one jar now and the other nine later if you can pressure cook all ten at once or to leave nine sterilized jars uninoculated while you let one colonize.
