I can feel the sharp edge of the petri's, and it is clearly the edge that the parafilm is breaking through.
Yes, but if the parafilm was fresh it wouldn't crack in that sharp spot. I've seen this happen for years. You bought a roll that had been sitting on someone's shelf for a long time.
Next time get 2" parafilm since it's easier to work with and the right width. RR
actually someone sent me some after reading that one thread about using micropore tape. I just now bought a roll of it, but ya what you are saying is obviously valid as a possibility. I had thought it was the sharp edge of the petri, but it could indeed be older film as you are suggesting. Glad I mentioned it. This is good info for folks to know. And by folks, I mean me of course.

yes, that is what many people use them for. I personally think a better option is use petri dishes to grow your mycelium out on, of course, but use a slant (Which is a Culture tube partly filled with agar with the tube at a 30 or so degree angle, hence 'slant'. Often with a piece of wood in it as well.) for long term storage, which will keep for a year or two. OR my personal favorite, and super cheap, a culture tube filled with distilled water with mycelium placed inside. It has been shown to keep cultures alive for 20 years and more, with no differentiation. The 'slant' has to be refrigerated, the distilled water does not.
