Your Casing Setup???
    #1982356 - 10/05/03 08:48 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

My friend has just birthed 3 PF cakes in a perlite poor mans pod w/ heater and air pump. 3 more will be ready soon. He would like to case these. I showed him the faq that says casings need to go into a different terrarium than cakes. And so his next question was, how does he set up a casing environment that doesn't require misting or fanning? He'll probably go with the 60/40 coco tec. Please share suggestions for casing environments that are low maint. and space conservative. Do you know anyone who grown casings in with cakes or is it just a sure fail?
Thank you!

i'd suggest a similar set up to your cake pod but without the perlite.
add a coolmist for humidity and air exchange as i belive that a coolmist will produce less humidity than perlite.
someone will be quick to correct me if i'm wrong.

I also can't seem to find a referance for the suggested humidity of a casing chamber???

i think casing chambers are like 75%rh because they create their own humidity.

You can put two holes it the top of the pod. One on each end about a inch around. Cut two pieces of rubber and put a screw threw them and mount them in a way that the rubber can slide over the holes making them bigger or smaller. By doing this you can control the humidity to the exact percent.

As far as casings and cakes growing together I?ve seen it done

Magash, I am sorry but as a Mets fan, so relatively impartial ot the A's, but I am sooo pulling for the red sox's because I want the Sox to beat the shit out of the Yankees and then end up with a Sox/Cubs WS, because then one of them HAS to win.

The large cakes are just a bunch of small cakes broken up then allowed to grow together for a week.

I used clear rubbermaid bins + saran wrap.

They're cheap and they work well. Fan + mist once a day.

So your pyrex or some other sort of tray in the bin and covering the tray with saran wrap? How long does the saran wrap stay on? how deep are the trays? When you say your misting once a day, I assume you're saying you remove the saran wrap and mist the casing?? Once it starts pinning, are you just spraying the sides or what? are you suplying humidity to the bin at all?
Thank you!
