Stumbled upon this and just wanted to see what you all thought it might be. This is how I found it....Growing right off the top. Its still there. I think its a small birch stump.
Is it to old to harvest and use for teas?
Thank you

That looks more like a Fomitopsis to me.

Is there hemlock in the area? I do not believe that is a birch. Was the fungus dry and light like a dry old rotten log gets, itself? Or is it hard and very woody? It could very possibly be an old decomposing Ganoderma. Compare to Ganoderma tsugae.

Hello and welcome!
I believe you have a specimen of Fomitopsis, possibly Fomitopsis pinicola
You can visually compare your image(s) to these collections of Fomitopsis pinicola:
http://mushroomobserver.org/observer/observation_search?pattern=Fomitopsis+pinicola
Or you can compare your find to this description:

It is very possible. I have have never seen one with a stipe like that, but I presume growing out the top of a log F. pinicola could produce that feature.
