Hashfinger said: Also, that creek looks almost identical to the one I found yesterday. Not saying its the same stream, cuz I know its not, but it is actually kind of difficult finding flat windy creeks around here. Lots of deep ravines and valleys, so you gotta follow things downstream quite a bit until it flattens out. Anyway, there is also a really old abandoned apple grove right next to a section of the creek. I'm stoked about that as a potential morel sweet-spot.
O yeah! That apple grove sounds bomb and your totally right. Most creeks here don't flood high until they travel down south or west. I know two areas Ive scouted on google earth that are really windy and flat. That was one of them. The other spot I think I can hunt. Still haven't got over to walk it. I know out in the woods is less chance of finding as much as public mulch beds. I think it will be worth more to me finding them in their natural habitat
I wouldn't say that's necessarily true here in Ohio. I've only found them in the forests and never in mulch beds. SW Ohio.
Well Im on the right track then lol.

I went hunting for an hr or so today. I was in Morel habitat. On a hillside full of tulip poplar. Theres a horse pasture there. Lots of hay bales. I saw nothing that interesting besides knotweed around hay bales and under poplar trees. I found some along the road by the creek too damn near growing from pavement! Im beginning to wonder if this is even knotweed?

Yeah that last pic is a knotweed skeleton. I use the really long ones as hiking sticks. They aren't super sturdy, but they're incredibly light and they'll take a surprising amount of abuse.
Looks like a cool habitat!

Thanx o8u. Last year I couldnt find knotweed at all. This year I cant stop finding it lol. If its true what they say about voids liking the stuff. I might just find some this year. I have been searching for skeletons of it everytime I find sprouts. The main difference I find in this species is the stalks are straight and not kinked like they are in a lot of the pics I see online. I have spots now with rotted hay bales too but I have yet to see cincts pop from them. Even last year. I think its more rare in these parts like fineing them in a cow pasture.

The knotweed shoots are just about perfect for harvesting. Apparently, they can be prepared much like asparagus.

That link said that it grows 3cm a day! Its taking over my area for sure. i pulled one up best I could and it was definitely rooted to other sprouts.

Ovoids and knotweed happen to share the same habitat, that's all. I've found patches both in and out of knotweed, there's nothing important about their relationship from what I can tell.

Yeah, knotweed doesn't excite me much. Almost all my finds have had absolutely nothing to do with knotweed. A nice springy sandy ground covered in grassy vegetation is much more important, IMO.

I remember reading of the springy ground mentioned before by Koods I found some in this area. It dint dawn on me until later while coincidentally reading the 2013 official ovoid thread. Now you mention it. Ha! Thats the shit. I don't think I have the balls to start anything in these habitats. Im hoping. Fingers crossed my research will pay off with beautiful pictures I think ovoids are something worth documenting. The net has influenced things a lot in finding out jus how far ovoids have traveled. Or maybe an eye into how they were introduced or origin.
