bobcat sighting!
    #19829017 - 04/11/14 03:45 PM (10 years, 9 months ago)

I was hiking with a friend and my dog today when we saw a bobcat cross the trail ahead of us up a hillside. when we got up to where it had crossed, we saw it taking down a squirrel in a big oak tree about 10-15 feet away. there was this crazy thrashing of orange/white fur with the squirrel bitching about the whole ordeal. it was over in about 2 seconds but was one of the most awesome wildlife experiences ever. pretty exciting for my dog too. she loves chasing squirrels. it seemed like the bobcat was using us as a decoy since the squirrel was likely watching us and my dog as we climbed the hill.

Very cool, that would be quite the experience.

Me and a buddy saw one last summer dart into the woods as we were driving in the middle of no where, but only caught a glipse of it for a couple seconds.

yeah usually it's a glimpse of one running away. this was definitely special. another time me and my ex saw one crossing on a log across a coastal wilderness creek. it didn't notice us until it was almost across, and changed it's entire way of walking. it had a very fluid magical energy before it saw us. this was the same log that I had been charged by a red weasel a few year before. it ended up running right through my legs to the other side.

I have seen tons of bobcats while deer hunting in the south.  The coolest time is when a pack of bobcat kittens came through.  They saw me first and were hissing.  I'm not sure where their mom was.  She may have been off getting them some food.  I've seen some really cool wildlife interactions and such while deer hunting.

2 days before Christmas I looked out my window and heard a cat crying, I looked down and there was a bobcat kitten laying under a window leaned against my house crying purfusely. I left her there for 2 more nights without disturbing her or going anywhere near her and she cryed louder and louder every night. I waited 2 days for mama to come back but she never did and there was no tracks from her in the yard or surrounding area so I took her in. she fit in the palm of my hand at the time, she weighed ten and a half pounds 2 weeks ago and gets bigger every day. ohh and I named her lucy :sun:

that's awesome, although I wouldn't have been able to stand the kitten crying for a couple days. read up on the care for bobcats and don't tell anyone unless you get a permit. I want one someday.

right now im just telling people shes a stray cat I found and they just exclaim how pretty she is, I have the means to care for her. plenty big house to stretch her legs in, an outdoor fenced in enclosure she cant get out of and she puts a harness on and goes on walks with me no problem. she actually acts more like a dog than my moms chiuaua/pinkingnese/toy poodle does. I am going to work on getting a permit for her as soon as I have the cash for the process.

My neighbor about 300 yards away just told me he saw a bobcat run after a rabbit in his backyard one morning a few weeks ago.  He rents this super cool property that is surrounded by 3 separate ponds that I wanted to rent, but the landlord doesn't allow dogs..  Anywho, I am keeping my eye out for this guy, although the dogs by our place probably keep it at large.

I will post pics very soon. bobcats in the wild are crazy, twice while deer hunting as another member mentioned above. twice have I had a bob cat pace me about 20 yards behind and about 30 or forty yards off to the left then hed slink behind me and be the same distance but off to the right and keep switching back for over five minutes, I thought it was really cool but after you don't see them anymore is when it gets scary

scariest thing for me deer hunting is having pheasants flush literally a foot in front of you, I love pheasant hunting but when im not expecting a bird to flush its scary. after it happening about 8 times one week I walked around a tree deer hunting and saw something get up and move quickly and prepared myself for another pheasant, it eneded up being a bobcat coming out of its den and my foot half blocked the opening so he climbed halfway up my leg then trough my legs and screwed in the other direction.

Thats awesome Whitelight!

One night a couple friends and I were having a fire.  My buddy  tells me the night before two bobcats were in his front yard the night before making loud meowing kinda sounds.  So the dumb asses we are made the same calls.  Then a few min later a pair of large green eye appeared from the side of a large bush just outside the circle of light.  There was a soccer ball by me feet so I kicked the ball at it.  It hissed and swatted the ball back at us.  We all yelled and ran inside like a bunch of weenies

yeah no way I was passing up this oppurtuniy. shes absoltley fine around people and just wants to cuddle and rub her head on your leg. if I didn't have the means to care for her I would have brought her somewhere that would have taken care but I couldn't let it go. like a Christmas gift from the universe.

oh shit, that's crazy. the scariest thing we have around here in new England is poison ivy and hornets nesting in the ground. i mean falling injuries end up bad too when hiking. i have seen a mountain lion on seven different occasions over the past 10 years or so. the first time we were up at 330 to go worm picking then hit this stream that runs into a resovior that's illegal to be at but i swear i can slam 30 bass there in 2 hours all over 3 lbs. we turned into the field to pick worms and there was a fucking mountain lion on the edge of the field 40 feet in front of us with 2 cubs. as we pulled in a second lion jumped over the rock wall at the field edge with a  third cub in her mouth she put it down they kind of looked at us for 5 or 10 seconds like what the fuck, who the fuck do you think you are coming in this field with that truck then walked off down the field and into the woods.

I would love to see a wild bobcat. I've seen a black panther cross the road in front of me before. Then on another occasion I was a black panther with two smaller brown ones.

They look quite similar to the bobcat yeah?  I like looking at photos of the ones that live in snow.  It would be so awesome to see one.

Sounds exciting.  If you go out hiking/camping do you hear lots of interesting noises around?  Can you even go out camping safely?  Here in Aus, although we have a lot of deadly creatures, mainly snakes and spiders, they rarely bother you.  Although you have to watch out for snakes around your property if you have children around.  Kangaroos are extremely timid and won't let you get close, although they are fierce fighters when they want to be.  Actually I take that back, I live up north in the tropics and crocodiles are very common.  There are deaths semi-frequently, but usually when people are being stupid.  2 drunk guys swam through croc infested waters late last year to be tough or whatever, one made it across, the other got eaten.  We have 5 metre long crocs up here, they're basically dinosaurs.

I chased a skunk out of my obsidian mine camp yesterday. I was running literally 10' behind him yelling at him. I'm amazed he didn't try to spray me. There wasn't even a skunk odor in the air. He was a big one though. I could have easily grabbed him by the tail.

its total fucking bullshit that it sat outside less than 3 pounds for 2 and a half days with a foot and a half of snow and not a single visit from its mother. it would have died, i saved its life. and its not "a little fucking pet" shes an amazing creature that interacts wonderfully around my family and others as well. shes more than happy and loving to live the life she does.

Exactly, which is why it doesn't belong in your house. You might think it's cute now but you're fucking that cat over big time. Sorry if you're offended by that but the truth is harsh.

like I said if I did not think I could care for it I would have brought it somewhere where that has the abilities as well as I to raise it properly. she doesn't just sit around my house. we have more land than we know what to do with, we live in the woods. the house is always open. she comes and goes as she pleases. we have four goats and they are fine around her and shes fine around them, sometimes she actually sleeps with them in the pen. my mothers dog is more of a hassle to live with and take care of than this cat.

if she wanted too she could take off at any point, but she loves us and we love her. we take a walk before supper about every night for an hour through the woods and the goats and cat stumble around through the woods right by our side. shes pampered, I cant see how im fucking the cat over at all by saving its life and giving it a warm loving home with loving creatures around it, rather than leaving it out to probably freeze and die and amount to nothing. totally makes sense right? yeah

Cool, very cool!  I used to hunt them 40 years ago before I knew better. I only killed one and that was the end of it for me. I totally regret that act of senseless violence.

Once when fishing a remote canyon above the Smith River in Northern California Redwoods near Gasquet,  I inadvertently trapped one against a cliff wall at about 40ft.  We stared intently into each others eyes and then it charged me head on.
When it got to within several feet of me it was able then to have another route of escape and jumped to the side and up a tree about 50 ft high. This all happened in less than a second and before I really could even react.  If he had full on attacked my guess is he could have easily killed me even though I doubt he weighed 25 lbs.  They are amazingly beautiful animals.

I have gone on 12 hour hikes for 25 kilometers on a mountain with cougars by myself and I never saw one. The fear of being attacked by wild animals is fairly irrational. It is more likely to attack your pets or small children. And ya no one should keep a bobcat captive.

like I said if I did not think I could care for it I would have brought it somewhere where that has the abilities as well as I to raise it properly. she doesn't just sit around my house. we have more land than we know what to do with, we live in the woods. the house is always open. she comes and goes as she pleases. we have four goats and they are fine around her and shes fine around them, sometimes she actually sleeps with them in the pen. my mothers dog is more of a hassle to live with and take care of than this cat.

if she wanted too she could take off at any point, but she loves us and we love her. we take a walk before supper about every night for an hour through the woods and the goats and cat stumble around through the woods right by our side. shes pampered, I cant see how im fucking the cat over at all by saving its life and giving it a warm loving home with loving creatures around it, rather than leaving it out to probably freeze and die and amount to nothing. totally makes sense right? yeah

It is unwise to keep it with you.  Highly territorial, will draw in the males, produce offspring, your other animals may die, etc.  If you value your other animals to a lesser degree, realize that the owners of adjoining properties may feel otherwise toward their own children and animals.  The male bobcats that she will eventually draw in have a much larger, overlapping territory...

Sorry dude but that's total fucking selfish bullshit that you want to keep that bobcat as your little pet.

Ran-D is right.  As with pretty much all small critters she'll be peaceful now but you will see a very sudden switch into adult behavior.  A bobcat is more dangerous than a mountain lion.  Dont mix it with anything breeding it.  You really need to get it to a rehab facility.  In my teens I worked with an organisation that rehabed injured and former pet, large cats and bobcats will give you a go before much larger cats.  You will see a quick switch in behavior.  Theyre not "pack" animals and she will challenge you.

If you care about her you will pass her off to where she needs to be.  Be happy knowing you left her better than you found her and played your role, dont get greedy.  You're supposed to shed a tear when you let them go   Maturity teaches you this.

What are you feeding her?

You may wish to send him a private message.  We traded a few, and I advised him the cat should have been individually hunting by at least 55 days ago, as well as many other things...

A friend of mine was feeding some wild cats at a facility and in a split second her middle finger was butterflied open from the palm to the tip down to the bone.

I butterflied my big toe this weekend by being up in the mountains, from the base all the way to the tip:shrug:

it was rough, had been up for about 30 hours, when we got camp set up I ate a solid dose of really good mdma, then afuckinglot of extremely high purity lsd and more mdma, then as sun was setting awholefucking lot more lsd another 100 mg of mdma and 300 mg of mda. hiked up a bit over camp looked down and it was bleeding with my heart beat like spurting out blood so my buddy ripped his shirt off and we tied it around the base of my big toe and stopped the bleeding. I didn't feel the cut happen, and now about a week later still cannot feel the cut. and its the worst cut ive ever had in my life. like its deep and long and bad
