You're doing better than me... I haven't even found any inactives in my usual spots... Still very dry around here, but the last two nights have been an improvement. Hopefully next week I can at least find some inactives growing.

Things are finally starting for me... Still a little dry, but can only get better from here.
I find this lonely sub first off and then another little pin not far from it.

Then I had a run in with a wallaby and was just about to give up, but I spotted this little group underneath a fallen fern.

Nice find Blessed!
Interesting, I've never seen subs growing directly off a tree like that

Yeah, I agree. Very cool find though. There's obvious bluing so it's seems safe to say if it's not a sub it's definitely a psilocybe sp.

Yep, they certainly do like the ferns, although most of my finds are in the grass just before the ferns, but I'm sure there's a lot of wood-rich soil beneath the grass.
Nice subs you found... looks like a good area. Very moist, much more so than my patches at the moment. Great photos too!

blessed said: I too have been picking up on the fern connection, but even in places that seem perfect for them to grow there none in sight. any suggestions?
I can't offer any suggestions... it's really just luck. Sometimes you'll come across a place that looks perfect and you'll find nothing, other times you'll find them in places that just don't seem right (for example. I occasionally find subs growing from sand).
IMO woodchip beds are the best place. I had a patch a few years ago on a woodchip bed where I could pick between 500g - 1kg fresh every week (I've posted many pictures in previous seasons (2010 - 2012 I beleive). It was crazy how many subs were growing there. Unfortunately a thick layer of mulch has been put over the woodchips now and the mushrooms now grow in very small numbers. I would always choose woodchip beds over bracken ferns.

It's not a sub, if that's what you're asking.
Looks maybe like a Gmnopilus sp. maybe... I'm not sure on though. Someone else will let you know.

Nice pics mate. Habitat shot looks really good. I wish I could get out into the bush for a hunt, would be a lot nicer than just going around parks in suburbia.

Some shots from this morning.... Sorry for the large images, I ran out of upload space a long time ago so I have to use offsite image hosting. Will get a supporter account again next week so I can upload direct.

From the photos you posted, it looks like you're looking in the right sort of habitat. Maybe expand your search in that general area, you may get lucky.

Some of them look a bit manky and the photos aren't great, but I beleive they're subs.
Check for blue bruising, and spore print on foil any you're not sure of.

I'm not sure what blue bruising is or what you meant about the spore print will do some quick research. Thank you.
Blue bruising is exactly what it sounds like... I don't know how to explain it in a more simple way... Squeeze the stems or caps of the mushrooms, you should notice some blue staining within a few minutes.
To make a spore print, remove the cap from the stem and place it on a piece of foil (with the gills facing down on the foil) and let sit for 12 hours or so. You should notice a spore print after this time, which is another way to help identify your finds. The print should be purple/black

Subhunter said: What do people think about telling the school what I found in the garden bed? It's in an early child section... My girl is a teacher and went spaz because I didn't tell anyone. Thoughts?
I have an amazing patch at a primary school. I could literally pick half a kilo there each week. Half of it has had heavy mulch laid over it and the mushrooms don't fruit anymore, but the other part is still good to go, although hasn't started fruiting as of yet... few more weeks and it should be good.
It's up to you whether you tell anyone about it. Personally, I wouldn't, but I suppose if it's for young children (5 and under) then maybe you should say something as younger children tend to put almost anything in their mouths.
