* Tasmania Season 2014 *
    #19820491 - 04/09/14 08:28 PM (9 years, 9 months ago)

I was in Flinders Island for work and came across some interesting fungi: Ergot (Claviceps purpurea) on cocksfoot grass (Dactylis glomerata). Seems like a good chance to start off the 2014 season, or am I stretching it too far?

Enjoy!

Hi Obtuse, no I haven't seen a sub yet.

I looked out for them in Flinders Is., where it had rained plenty, but not cool wnough yet. I'm off to Blue Tier next week and the forecast rain over the weekend might bring them out.

Amanita muscaria and Suillus species are popping up already. I got a few Suillus to put in the gravy last night. Yummy.

And yep, same ergot. It's not uncommon, I keep seeing them around, mostly on ryegrass (Lolium)

Hi subhunter, is that the first sub picture for the season? And why are your pictures so foggy and yellow? It's difficult to see the colour of the mushrooms, and accurate colour is crucial for accurate identification.

If you're using Instagram filters I'd turn them off.

My thought too. In my experience, Hypholoma are very common in pine plantation. I find subs in that habitat, but less than in wet sclerophyll or woodchip beds.

subhunter: I don't see why not. I've found them in all parts of the state that get the right habitat

RULES!!!

7. No requesting or revealing specific locations.
Use common sense about what might be considered a specific location.  Anything that could lead someone right to the spot is not allowed - It is perfectly fine to mention places that are more than a couple square kilometers.  When in doubt, do the moderators a favor and just don't say it.

Nope, sorry. Liberty caps look pretty different, and are generally pointy. The stem is quite fibrous and not at all brittle like in yours. They're found in long grass in meadows.

Hi mushroom_spider, they're well and truly out down south.

Sounds like things are still fairly quiet down here?

I've been out of the loop for a couple of years, got tied up with life and other things. Still haven't had a proper successful hunt, but something has brought me back to here this year so I'm thinking maybe this could be my time.

I'm going for a drive North-East today with a friend who is down from Melbourne so I'll be having a bit of a wander and seeing what I can see.

Hope everyone is well!

Depends what you mean by "down here". In the south of the state we're pretty much in peak season. I've been seeing them pop up in the usual places already.

it looks like there will be a bit of a drought down south soon, hasn't been substantial rain the last week 1\2 it will probably dry out or kill off some of the specimens. oh well :frown:

Again, that depends very much where you are, so don't extrapolate to the whole of 'down south'. In my area, for example, there is consistent dew and fog keeping them going.

ayepeace, just so you're aware, we do not have cubes in Tasmania, so don't even bother looking in cow shit like you would in QLD. Also, there have been reports of subs being found in SE QLD... I was looking at an old thread not too long ago where someone found some subs in (from memory) a rainforest in SE QLD.

That was me, pretty much exactly a year ago. Not sure whether they were exactly Psilocybe subaeruginosa or a closely-related wood-loving Psilocybe, but close enough I would have called them subs.

Not far, less than 10 Km.
