overgrow.com if you do something called prepetual harvest you can get as many harvests as you want. once a day once a week or more commonly done twice a month.

Look up SOG.
Check it out
Now to keep this mushroom related
Keep the needle clean
I't simple: Find a sponge that is very resilent while wet...A dish sponge wont work...Use a car washing sponge or better yet a cosmetic sponge...All you do is cut a sponge slightly longer than the needle and about 1" thick (it will be a long rectangle ). Wet the sponge with alcohol...squeeze out excess alcohol...then slide the sponge over the needle....Now when you inject and remove the needle from a jar the sponge bounces back to keep the needle covered and moist with alcohol...Just to make sure I always squeeze and twist the sponge on the needle to make sure it is wet before each injection.

Magash,
Does that technique risk getting alcohol into your jars? Will that hurt your substrate/spores at all if wet alcohol gets in there?

Magash, is that your sterilizing trick that I've read about? Read a post about you having a particular way of sterilizing the needles. Just curious if that's it.

Yeah, the soft ones. Some sponges have what looks like thousands of different size holes. You want the ones like for cleaning your car. They have millions of little holes that all look about the same size

He he he.....I'm not crazy, I stopped growing large some time ago. I just hang around now and try and make it easy for others to grow too. We all have a right to grow and use what we want.

Very true, and remember they can do what they want. Warrents are meaningless pieces of garbage in the land of "pot growers are terrorist"
Now back on track
The 3 most important aspects of grain preparation are to achieve an uniform, correct water content, to kill all contaminants and to get a shakeable substrate.
There are 2 main approaches to grain preparation:
Method 1.) Rinse the grain several times under flowing water and simmer it until the grains are soaked and begin to explode. With rye the simmer time is around 45 minutes, with millet or millet based birdseed around 30 minutes(but it strongly depends on the individual brand) Then strain the cooked grain for 20 minutes, fill in jars, screw on a lid fitted with a filter and pressure cook for 1 hour.
Method 2.) Fill the jars directly with the proper amounts of grain and water and pressure cook for 1 hour. If one experiences bacterial contamination problems the grain can be left to soak up to 24 hours before pressure cooking to allow bacterial endospores to germinate.
Basic rye recipe for 1 pint jar:
- 100g(3.5 oz ~ 125 ml) rye - 110g(3.9 oz =110 ml) water - knife tip full of gypsum
Basic millet or birdseed recipe for 1 pint jar:
- 100g(3.5 oz ~ 140 ml) birdseed - 80g(2.8 oz = 80 ml) water - knife tip full of gypsum
If you are going to prepare rye for producing spawn, you might use a tad less water( I use 105g in that case)
Fill into the jar, screw the lid fitted with a polyfill filter or a filter disc on the jar and pressure cook for 1 hour. Immediately after the pressure has settled, using protective oven mitts or a towel, take the still burning hot jars from the cooker and shake them well to mix the more wet and drier kernels.

Yes, back on track...
I was never impressed with either of those methods for producing adequate rye spawn. So that leads me to post Method 3:
Soak rye for 24-36 hours. Drain, load into jars, then PC for 1hr.
Method 1 worked well for popcorn, which was the method I preferred. Method 1 with rye I was never able to master. Exploded kernals is not a good thing, especially with rye (on the contrary, split popcorn kernals is a good thing for colonization speed). Water content is hard to monitor this way without exploding kernals. Method 2 worked, but always left half the kernals dry, and half over-hydrated. Even when I PC'd for 15 min, cooled then opened the PC and shook them up then re-PC'd, they would still come out unsatisfactory.
Find a method that works well for you. To each his own. Method 3 produces consistant results for me...
