I'd say use a 15W flouro tube, emits practically no heat. Incandescent and compact flouros both put out way to much heat to be in a cardboard box.

Actually the best light to use is grow bulbs used for plants. I like Agrosun I?m such a showoff picture whore

They put out the same heat. 15 watts from a fish tank bulb put out the same as 15 watts from a grow bulb. Only difference it the spectrum.

i have a 15w floro tube...and it DOES put out some heat, but with the recent colder temperatures here...it holds my terrarium at the right temp. but if you are setting it on the lid of the terrarium like i do...it WILL affect your temps.

If you have a wal-mart, you can look for the Christmas lights that are rope type. You can run these inside the lid however you wish, glue them, etc. Get the white rope lights, they are covered in a flexable plastic tubing. Agrosun is for plants, there is some red spectrum for photosynthesis. If you choose a florescent, go for a daylight class with a kelvin of 6500K.

Sounds like you have a similar setup as my friend... If you want to keep the terrarium looking camo... go get some touchlights (everready brand) from meijer or walmart... they are 3.99 and will run over 6+ hours. They are powered my 4 AA batteries... so get rechargables.. velcro them to the inside of the terrarium lid and you will have no visible wires showing...

Wal-mart has a low power flourecscent "growlight", it says right on the package wrote in green. They work fine. Christmas lights in a terrarium? Has anyone checked the price of batteries lately?

You can buy those super bright LED flexible lights that are used for laptop computers. They have a USB connector on them and put out quite a bit of light and almost no heat at all. Only problem is you need to locate it close to a computer to power the thing. The small strings of Christmas lights seem to work fine also but put out more heat.

i tried x-mas lights and a 15w floro tube...and i ended up using the floro because it actually put out less heat. the string of lights was pretty long tho, so i dont know how much heat would come off of a shorter strand. i leave my 15w on for around 9 hours a day, and i brings my temps from mid 60's to high 70's, but thats fine... just play around with different lights and see what works. i was really cramped on space so i only had a couple options. try em out and check temps. be careful with the cardboard

dude, even if you use a flouro, you won't have to have it one for more than 2 hours, and if it is in a fixture and not directly touching any cardboard you won't start a fire and you'll grow shrooms.

as far as using a full size computer to power LED's - i use something like this for my pda in the vehicle. would work in home use to with a 12 volt transformer, tiny battery charger, or like.

or just hack the usb cable and use a ratshack power adapter... or any 12v source that puts out 3-500 ma
