Good mycelium growth so far?

i inoculated these jars 9/23, and the temperature started around about 61 - 63, and for the past few days has been 65 - 70, this is what they look like so far, is it lagging? or not too bad for conditions?....sorry the pics suck dick, the camera does too
i have golden teachers and malabars, all of the GTs seem to be kicking ass, only 1 malabar jar is cookin but the other ones are slow jacking pretty bad, they are about twice as far behind the slowest GT

COlonizing at 60 - 70 F? Way too cold. It would colonize much nicer at about 80 - 90.

well thats the prob man, its as good as i can do fuckin winter is coming and my parents only put the heat on so high, so it maintains to about 64 - 70 in my closet, thats why im askin if this is good or pretty shitty for conditions, i will have an incubator next time, this is just my first grow, they seem to still be colonizing atleast, hopefully they colonize and produce some nice flushes, atleast i will be good for fruiting temps

Don?t worry, they seem to be colonizing ok even though it?s a bit cold. Maybe it?ll take a bit longer, but what?s the hurry? How are the lids, do they get enough gas exchange?

Try a box-in-box inncubator, its really simple, 2 plastic tubs, fish tank heater and some water, I put mine together for about 30 pounds. Magash has posted the design before, do a search. As you say its not 100% necessary but it will speed things up, a LOT!, good luck

yeah thats how i feel, just as long as they grow i will be happy. I do not have any tape on the lids, so there should be good gas exchange. I will turn them upside down if they seem to slow down, but lately since the temp has been in the high 60's its been growing much faster.
the strains are golden teacher and malabar, the GT's are doing way better than the malabar(though one malabar is keeping up pretty well), but they are still coming along decently, just really lagging. I am praying for them, maybe that is helping their growth with the shit temp
i will for sure build an incubator just liek that, psilomonkey, i had planned on doing it just like that. thank you all for the replies, makes me feel way better about their progress

so far, my jars are doing good, but none of them have any grown on the very bottom of the jars. Since almost all of the substrate is colonized atleast with a thin whispey layer of mycelium(some parts are thicker and more strandy), and none on the bottom, would you say its a good time to lay them on their lids for better gas exchange? i dont have tape on them or anything, but am still wondering if that would be a wise choice and if it would help the bottom of the jars colonize faster. I noticed the jars these past three days have accumulated much more moisture on the inside...so what do you think?

Someone else is colonizing with low temps as well 65-75max - growth seems around the same as yours - substrate is in wide mouth half pints. After they got around 80%+(exterior), where they are now - they started getting a good amount of water inside - no tape, loosened lids and flipped to try and get some of the water to maybe move down to the top layer of verm. didnt happen.. water is pervelant - its almost scary... since a few show some yellow places on bottom of jars... where water has damaged? the mycelium. They say its normal to have the sweat/water.. Someone even tried putting a little dry heat in there to try and reduce moisture... no effect. After the jars were flipped, bottom growth was accellerated.

I've always just let them grow at room temp whatever that may be...in the summer that was in the low 80's and right now its around 69....I really don't see a difference in the speed or quality of growth.....same with fruiting btw

I wonder if the spores that prefer cold temps germinate when you don't incubate.
Perhaps your jars are filled with mycelia which prefers it a little cooler.
I've never seen colonization as quick as yours in those temps.
You're jars are going about as fast as an incubator already.
Flip them jars.
Also, the bottom of the substrate may be a little dry if you used a stove to sterilize. Give the jars another week or two. If it doesn't look like it will colonize, you may be better off scraping the uncolonized part of the cake off.

as of now im growing B+, we recently had a pretty good cold front move down and the temps were about 50-60ish, so i thought of a pretty good idea, since i only had about 5 dollars to my name, i got a small styrofoam ice chest, and a bottle or 2 of REALLY hot water and the temps stay at around 80-85 as long as you change the bottle 2-3 times. worked great, i already birthed one cake, and it has a single mushroom on it as of now (wow, lol!).

great idea spook.
I have a monitor with a v shaped top. I can place my box flat on top of the monitor and let the heat from the monitor incubate my stuff. Since the monitor is v shaped my flat box doesn't block the monitor's vents.
Amazing diagram a: _ v

allright, sounds good man, thanks a lot, i will probably flip them tonight then
I will add that when i mixed my verm/brf it was kind of sloppy but there was no water running on the bottom of the bowl, so all the water i added was mixed well, but in almost all of my jars all you can see is a brf slop, is this going to matter? its like a slosh of brf accumulated at the bottom, maybe i just added too much brf[you can tell in the fourth pic down there is brf at the bottom]
that is a good idea spook dawg, how often did you have to change them bitches exactly, every 2-3 hours? lol, did you boil the shit and funnel it in? that would be HOT

i have a few more questions. My jars are close to colonizing, hopefully no longer than a week and a half, and i have been reading on good methods for fruiting...and there is coldshocking to trigger pinning then you birth, and there is dunking which rehydrates the cakes of any lost water during colonization(some do at birth, some only in between flushes).
now my question is, does dunking at birth coldshock the cakes as well as rehydrate(cuz of the cool water)?
and also...if i cold shock my cakes then birth them into my containers and put them in indirect sunlight, do i keep them in indirect sunlight for the entire time the sun is out? or should i move them into darkness after a certain amount of hours for a beneficial reason?
thanks for reading

I am also wondering about this. I do not know whether or not I should dunk and coldshock before I birth them in my terrarium for the first time. should I just wait until my first harvest off the cakes and the dunk and roll them?

from what i been reading, since its my first time, once they are fully colonized im going to leave them in indirect sunlight for about 4 or 5 days, then cold shock them for about 12 hours then birth them out and see what happens, then after the first flush(which is hopefully decent) i will scrape and dunk then roll in(dry or wet?) verm. sounds liek the easiest plan for me
edit: i will only coldshock them bitches if leaving them in indirect sunligth doesnt do the job to get them pinning

So once your mycelium spreads througout the jar you take your cakes out and expose them to indirect light for several days? the same with coldshocking? I just put the exposed (uncovered) cake in the fridge for 24 hours? The on to my terrarium for birthing? is that the most acceptable pattern! I yearn for the largest harvests possible but I aint risking contam.

unless you have a really clean fridge, leaving the cake exposed in the fridge is a bad idea. Not to mention that it'll probably leech the moisture from the cake.

so after the dunk the cake is put back into the jar? and then to the fridge? should the jars be sterilized again before this happens?

HAHA, I JUST DID THIS! In my area the weather has been in the 50s and 60s and the house is kept pretty cool. So I noticed that growth had slowed down and was looking for a cheap way to to keep them warm, this is my first grow.
So I borrowed a friends electric blanket and have been keeping them warm, but not too warm. Now I'm off to buy a good thermometer so I can tell exactly how warm they are being kept.

what would you say is best for initiating pinning?
1. leaving colonized cakes in jars and putting under light
2. birthing colonized jars and puting them in terrarium under light
so really, whats better in jars or out of jars

Invitro pinning is the safest way. At least you know you have pins pefore you birth.
Try a little of both and compare results.

a few jars are ALMOST done, probably like 95% for the golden teachers, malabar are still doing good.
i hit the jars lightely to loosen the cakes to fall down so the bottom of the jars could have more room to breath...and some of the cakes broke a lil bit, not badly but still. also the mycelium is more fluffy, is that normal? another thing yous hould know is.... i left them in indirect sunlight for about 4 hours, on accident, is this going to affect them if i keep them in the dark for the next few days?
