Do colinizing jars need fresh air?

9 days ago I innoculated 6 1/2 pint jars with 15cc's of GT solution, as of today there is not one speck of mycelium at all. To keep the jars in a sterile enviroment I put them in a shoe-boxed sized STERILE tupperware type thing then put this box into a larger storage container also sterilized, then a heat pad on low is under it. My question is...could the fact that no fresh air is getting to these jars attribute to the slow/no growth? Also, would it be a good idea to inject more spores into the jars after few days if nothing happens? ...I am only fucking with dark syringes from now on, regardless of popular belief I have had bad times with clear syringes. peace.

to begin germination i don't believe the jars need fresh air. i've found that as it nears 100% completion i have to loosen the lids and turn them upside down to get them to finish. but in your case i think you're allright.
what i'm worried about is the heating pad. those things, even on low, can get hot. if it's at all possible i'd suggest getting a fish tank heater and two rubbermaids and make a incubator. it's not that expensive or hard to do and it's worth it. good luck

I fully agree with ya on that.
I like to put a little pump in there to stir the water. keeps things from heating from the bottom up.

I'm also curious about re-inoculation. My friend has jar of karo water that has 0 signs of growth after two weeks. I told him not to re-inoculate cuz something could be wrong with the jar itself, but generally speaking is re-inoculation asking for trouble? Also, my friend is having success with a heating pad on low. He has a towel on top of the pad and his jars are on a short rack about 3/4" above the surface for air exchange. (he recently removed tape) Anyway his thermometer reads 80 resting right on top of the towel.

One would assume that as long as the jars are still sterile that re-innoculating would work, but who knows.....anyone done this??
