Shroom hunting in the Cascade Mountains (PICS).
    #1980083 - 10/05/03 12:27 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Today, I had planned on hunting Cyans in Seattle. But then I saw DethHed's post stating that none of his patches were going yet.

So I went to the Cascade mountains (east of Seattle) and found a few interesting specimens... I'm not going to get very detailed here because I'm in a tired and lazy mood. But if anyone cares to shoot from the hip, I appreciate it.

This is obviously a bolete. I looked in my books and couldn't make an ID...

I found it right next to this bolete, but they don't look like the same. Check out the color difference...

Here is a chanterelle of some sort...

and the gills...

Finally, here is something unknown... But the photo came out great...

These were all found near Keechelus Lake just east of Snoqualmie Pass in Washington State. The were mostly growing on dirt and/or fallen shrubs. I will take spore prints tonight.

i can see the last picture with nothing said about it now. looks like a big boletus or tylopilus, any details: spore print, taste, habitat, any reticulation at very apex of stem?

sorry i cant tell from that picture.

Don't take my word for it man, it's not like I know of every patch in the city, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see some cyan growth around seattle now in irrigated or otherwise wet areas... I just haven't seen any in my favorite patches (those being the nice ones closest to me, mostly unirrigated). I have a few in mind scattered around the city that I still want to check, but I had to run back east yesterday to pick up some shit I forgot when I was moving the week before last. I might do a little hunting when I get back in town...

I'd like to see the pics, I have never found a chanterelle myself and they're pretty rare around where you were hunting from what I've heard. I'm gonna be going back over the pass today, so I might stop and take a look as well, I didn't yesterday cause I figured it was too dry, it definitely looked like a nice day to be up in the mountains though.

DH

Sorry about the photos folks. I tried the ole third party link trick and it didn't work out so great... So I just uploaded them to the shroomery old school style.

Your first photo looks a lot like Boletus barrowsii. Try bruising the tubes and verify that they don't turn bluish. The spore print should come out a greenish brown.

I'm not terribly confident of this ID. That species is primarily from the southwest. It occurs in Colorado, but I don't know how much farther north. Also, it usually is a relatively early species - coming up near the beginning of the season for boletes here. If your mushrom season is just barely beginning then it may fit.

The second photo still isn't coming up.

Your "chanterelle" is a Clitocybe. Don't eat it. Some Clitocybes have muscarine, and many of them that don't are hard to digest. The spore print should come out white or pale pink. Notice that this mushroom has crowded true gills.

That last mushroom is actually a close relative of the chanterelles. Unfortunately, it's one of the species that is not for eating. It causes nausea and vomiting in a high percentage of people to try it, and I understand that it doesn't taste good anyway. It's Gomphus floccosus, which at least makes very nice photographs. It should have a brownish yellow spore print.

Nice photos, and interesting specimens.

Happy mushrooming!

i thought that Clitocybe looked like a Lactarius when i first looked at it. there appears to be latex coming out on the left of the gill shot. of maybe thats just water?

yea definately not a chanterelle. brutus.

Lactarius is another good possibility. The whole mushroom is clearly pretty wet, so I didn't associate latex with the wetness in spots on the gills.

If it's a Lactarius, it's not one of the ones considered worth eating.

Happy mushrooming!

Deth, I scored a good amount of Cyans in Seattle today. But I can't post them because my upload limit has been reached. Soon....

so did the Clitocybe lactariuses have latex coming out or no when you sliced it?
