PM inflames marijuana opponents
Last Updated Fri, 03 Oct 2003 22:24:39
OTTAWA - Prime Minister Jean Chr?tien is coming under heavy criticism for some off-the-cuff remarks he made about smoking marijuana.

INDEPTH: Marijuana

Chr?tien has always said he's never smoked pot, but on Friday he said he might consider it. "I never tried it. I said I might be able someday to do it," he said.

Chr?tien was more specific in an interview with a Winnipeg newspaper. "Perhaps I will try it when it will no longer be criminal," he said. "I will have my money for my fine and a joint in the other hand."

Chr?tien was referring to proposed legislation that would decriminalize marijuana. People caught with 30 grams or less would be subject to a fine, not a court appearance or a criminal record.

But the government is also trying to deter young people from smoking marijuana. Canadian Alliance MP Randy White, who is also vice-chair of the House of Commons drug committee, says Chr?tien's comments are counter-productive.

"To suggest to our young people that you can just start smoking marijuana, and just pay the fine and be done with it, is just irresponsible," said White.

Alberta Solicitor General Heather Forsyth has fought against decriminalization, saying it will encourage organized crime.

"I think it's a terrible message to send to our young people in this country. I think it's a terrible message to send to our young people, period."

and yet drinking wine in church is socially acceptable...

ahem... Anyway, it's awesome that someone so high up in the Candian goverment can make a statement like that, even if he does catch flak for it.

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

I always had grape juice in Church. Body and Blood of Christ, I dunno, I always thought it kind of unnecessary and morbid. I shocked the whole congregation once as a child when I ran up to the communinion alter and just started chugging all the Welches and munching on the Premium Plus unsalted. It was like I was urinating in somebody's mouth, the hysterical reaction that was provoked.

I did it because I had a message to get across, and that's just how I am.

Jean Chr?tien is not a "premier" thats a leader of a provincial government, sorta like a governor.
hes the prime minister, like a president, but less untouchable and evil
