This is my fear every time I had to take my car somewhere. This is exactly why when I bought my new car I only took it to the dealership, even though it cost me twice as much.
It really seems like unless you are friends with your mechanic, they will rip you off.

Not sure if that is so much as a scam as some others that ive seen. One time at walmart the guy told me I needed a new oil pan, evidently it was damaged or something. I asked to see it. The guy brought out a completely different oil pan, not even for the same model at all. It was way small. I called him out and demanded to speak with his manager. He apologizes, said he "must have made a mistake or something". Free oil change, never went back.

Well derr Jiffy lube is a scam.. they are also retarded.. my friend took his car there once and they forgot to screw the oil pan bolt back in all the way and it fell out later.
Do it yourself or if it's out of your league take it to a trusted mechanic, ask local car people.
There are still reputable shops out there.. usually they will specialize in a particular make or region like VW/Audi/BMW/only Euro cars or only Japanese cars or only American, etc.. Beware of shops that say they work on everything.. a Honda is way different from a Mercedes. An oil change though is easy shit.

yea its fucked that anyone would do such a thing. it's just business tho, at least thats how i saw it. if a mechanic tells me i need a new fuel filter or whatever im not going to tell him "sure", i'll say, "i will come back some other time then", and then i'll go to another repair shop just to make sure.
it's still fucked up, but it's not entirely their fault.. fuck em tho, im all for honest mechanics, and i do know many. fuck those guys tho.

I've got a 2010 sebring so these newer vehicles you can't do a lot of things on them unless you know your way around that particular car, but I do what I can on my own and then get the shop to do the bigger maintenance 5-10 thousand kilometers earlier than the manufacturer recommends, just to be safe.
I ask more questions than I probably need too, fuck I had the Chrysler dealership try to sell me some bullshit about the rotors/breaks a while ago and it ended up when I took the tires off myself and looked at them I still got 30,000kms on them before I had to do a complete replacement.
