So my retusus is showing some unusual growth, has anyone ever seen this before? It looks as though there's a new pup tip (or leaf tip, not sure what's the right word there) coming in and the leaf closest to it has developed a deep groove and a tannish, light brown area that accompanies the groove. Is this just the old leaf making room for the new one to come or do I have something I should be worried about here? I just recently got a collection of arios going but more or less I'm basically a newb to this type of cacti... Def haven't been around long enough to see any new growth.
Anyone know what this might be?

Looks like the leaf rottedd. Same thing happened to my retusus. Lost one then another. On a good note it hasnt spread to the others yet. Wiggle it some and see if it breaks free. I just lost an ancient fissuratus last week. It went all yellow and got all mushy. Sucks and it qas 150usd.

Damn that's rough man, sorry about your fissuratus. And yeah they aint cheap. I could go broke in one afternoon of shopping on ebay. If it is rotted, i hope its just this one leaf. It all happened really quick too, which seems really untypical of arios... Since they seem to be slow as mollases in every other respect. Well alright, i better suit up for a potential surgery. Wish me luck.
And as always, much obliged on the help and reply ferrel

You hit the nil on the head. Rot was a lot more obvious when I looked towards the leaf joint. After cuting though the tough skin I saw the rot and it smelled bad (stinky fucking bacteria ) so I cut it off and bombed the cut w freshly ground cinnamon. The rest of the leaves seemed alright but the rot from that one went down to the mainstem. W the whool I couldn't tell how far it went.
Sucks. That was my first ario... I hope he pulls through. Its prob my fault for still having them inside. I was going to construct a little shelf box that was protected from the rain... And man has it been rainy this summer. Everyday, no exaggeration. But sadly I've been so busy, I haven't had a chance to get started building it. W this retusus showing signs of rot, I might just end up moving outside to protect the others.

So, the retusus is fucked. Officially pulled it up last night. Decided to put a mamm bosc in its container. The soil was bone dry and I wanna say I only watered one time... Maybe two but I don't even think it was that much. Nerthless, it rotted at the mainstem. By the time it showed on the leaves, it was already done for.

Its cool tho... I just got this little beauty in recently. Its still waiting on a transplant...

So.... Maybe I could use some of your help here before I dive right in. I have two clay pots on hand for the transplant. One larger and then one smaller. Given the size of this little guy, which cont looks like the better choice?

Sorry to hear about that retusus man. My retusus furfuraceous died years ago of the same affliction. It happens.
On the pot size, id go,bigger. That tap root will swell to bigger size with time. Hell the root seems to develop first before you see any real growth up top.
Goodluck with it bro

Okay here's a question....
So the reason, I'm guessing, that I lost this last one was due to it being indoors since I got it. This concerns me because that was only about three months back. I've bough a few others basically directly after the OG retusus. So their potential rot date might be coming up. Loosing one, well it sucks but I can deal w that... But, LOOSING ALL of them! That would be very devastating for me.
So w that being said, I gotta get these girls outside. My biggest issue is rain and humidity. I was planning on building a box for my arios and !maybe some lophs, but time has been a scarce commodity for me lately but maybe I don't have to build anything.... I have access to a full sized glass aquarium tank right now and I'm curious if that could work. I'd lay it down on its side w the open side facing my hands for care and whatnot.
How does this sound? Humidy is going to be tricky to tackle but rainfall and even aggressive tropical rain (which the rain seems to blow in every direction) can likely be avoided for the most part. Aside from the tank, I was going to lay a sheet of plexiglass around the area of its open side.
Does this sound plausible? I really gotta get em outside

Rain is not too much of an issue. My thing would be himidty and where you are from, cmon, thats a big deal. If i lived where you live i would grow theobroma cacao as its been my white whale. But dont give up bro. If i were you i would, grow from seed. Eventually some would have to adapt. As has been the case with my ario seedlings. Bravoanus and like 3 fissuratus peppered about. You cant really see them but i prefer it that way. Give it time and monitor more agressively.

For Ariocarpus, Lophophora, Encephalocarpus etc - those with deep taproots - I use Long Tom pots, imported from the UK with a huge effort and some small expense.
