'God's Not Dead' * 1
    #19783788 - 04/02/14 12:20 PM (9 years, 9 months ago)

This new atheist bashing movie has Christians everywhere wetting themselves with glee.

From the movie website:

How far would you go…to defend your belief in God?

Present-day college freshman and devout Christian, Josh Wheaton (Shane Harper), finds his faith challenged on his first day of Philosophy class by the dogmatic and argumentative Professor Radisson (Kevin Sorbo). Radisson begins class by informing students that they will need to disavow, in writing, the existence of God on that first day, or face a failing grade. As other students in the class begin scribbling the words “God Is Dead” on pieces of paper as instructed, Josh find himself at a crossroads, having to choose between his faith and his future. Josh offers a nervous refusal, provoking an irate reaction from his smug professor. Radisson assigns him a daunting task: if Josh will not admit that “God Is Dead,” he must prove God’s existence by presenting well-researched, intellectual arguments and evidence over the course of the semester, and engage Radisson in a head-to-head debate in front of the class. If Josh fails to convince his classmates of God’s existence, he will fail the course and hinder his lofty academic goals. With almost no one in his corner, Josh wonders if he can really fight for what he believes. Can he actually prove the existence of God? Wouldn’t it just be easier just to write “God Is Dead” and put the whole incident behind him? GOD’S NOT DEAD weaves together multiple stories of faith, doubt and disbelief, culminating in a dramatic call to action. The film will educate, entertain, and inspire moviegoers to explore what they really believe about God, igniting important conversations and life-changing decisions.

Fail #1. An atheist may be dogmatic in another field, but cannot be dogmatic about a non-belief.

Fail #2. It is essentially impossible for the dominant culture (US Christianity) to be persecuted by the minority.

Fail #3. The student need only go to the college administration or the ACLU to get the professor bounced on his ass.

Fail #4. The entire movie is a strawman, portraying The Atheist as a total douchebag in all areas of life. Not surprisingly, the real-life Sorbo is a BAC.

Fail #5. Christians actually hate debate. Almost all will admit that nothing (as in facts, contradictions or internal inconsistencies) will ever change their minds.

Fail #6. Atheists don't hate God.

Fail #7. The counter arguments made by the Christian protagonist (argument from ignorance, argument from incredulity, etc.) have all been thoroughly and previously debunked by Hitchens, Dillahunty, Shermer, et al...

While the movie has been thoroughly panned by critics for its poor writing, ham-fisted directing and wooden acting; Christians are going nuts patting each other on the back because they got one over on the evil atheists. Many thousands on Facebook are writing 'God's not dead' on their faces. How quaint!

Spoiler alert:

The professor gets in a fatal accident and accepts JC as he lays dying. Good fun!

Ugh, I read about this.

These Christian parables make their opponents look like the stupidest and most ignorant people. What kind of professor would base their class' grade off of them denouncing God? Professors of philosophy aren't trying to convince the class of anything. As a matter of fact, they love the opposite. They love to engage with students. They don't want students to just say, "Yeah. You're right..." The whole point of an intro to philosophy class is to encourage independent thought. I don't know why just the story in this movie pissed me off so much.

EDIT: I just watched a trailer of the movie.

What is truly funny is that I was watching some video clips from http://atheist-experience.com/archive/. The call screeners are there for two main purposes:

1. To attempt to weed out crank callers.

2. To get a name, city and topic for the TV hosts.

That's about it.

So this one Christian calls in and asks why the show only features retarded Christian callers. The hosts explains that callers are not given any sort of literacy or IQ test, they are just average Christians calling in with borrowed arguments and previously debunked claims attempting to prove God's existence.

The Christian caller says no way are they all that stupid. The hosts just shrug and hilarity ensues. :jester:

Because it is a giant straw-man fallacy with no basis in reality.

What is actually truly ridiculous is when beings who only have a few decades of experience think they have it figured out.

The fact that they act so sure of themselves is merely to hide their uncertainties.

Some have existed longer and have more experience to draw upon.

What someone chooses to Align with says a great deal about them.

I would say that Morality is not relative at all and that there are different standards for different places.

Early Christianity was similar to Buddhism in that it had Upright Teachings showing that Morality is not relative and Early Christianity taught that Reincarnation is a real phenomenon.

When his Disciples asked Jesus when Elijah would return he stated that Elijah already had returned and they had done to him what they wished, this was right after John the Baptist lost his head.  Thus Jesus was stating that John the Baptist was the reincarnation of Elijah, I would say that Elisha was Jesus because Elisha also raised the dead.

Some people look at an image of a dead Jesus and they say that is strength, others don't see anything of meaning or value at all.

What you see speaks volumes about your individual Enlightenment Quality.

It is strange how so many are angry at God, when they don't contemplate what he did for them.

They haven't met him, disagree about whether he exists or not, and some literally hate him.

To be pissed at someone that you never met and insist doesn't exist anyway seems the height of irrationality...

Certainly. Even more crazy is to make a caricature of a person in a fictional movie and then hate that character who has no parallel in real life.

The Universe may only be a very small place.  You have only met a few individuals on a particular tiny pebble swirling around a sun.

Are there Beings more evolved than humans?

I suppose how evolved depends on the environmental parameters and how long such a thing was evolving for.

If there was I Being that never originated I would posit such a thing is God.

I would say that suffering increases the evolutionary process.

I view evolution as being an individual process.  Some Beings are older than others and have thus evolved greater capacities.

A Being needs a certain amount of dimensional complexity to animate a human vessel.

I was referring to evolving higher dimensions, going to places that have more dimensions than here on Earth.

Then the individual has evolved a vessel that is not subject to birth and death.

That is what all the Eastern Enlightenment schools are about.

Getting born again, the Christians are confused.  Getting born again refers to evolving a spiritual vessel that can live in the Higher Dimensions.

there is no mother, evil reversal ways to bring the fact for itself ..

what you call being your mother is to point all as being only for you or to

it is amazing how far you mean to force such absurdity of inferior perspectives as being an objective truth

it says how inferiority is deep in you but also how life is all about that .. so it looks like natural mean of any conscious living being

I'm not religious, but for the sake of argument I'll assume here that there is a God.  Would it not be possible that he is very powerful but not all-powerful?  That he could even be a very advanced biological being, as OC suggested in another thread?  God could be an inconceivably intelligent and tremendously powerful entity -- though still be finite.  Maybe God has no choice but not to intervene in our mess, either because he is not powerful enough or because such a thing would have the potential to make things worse.  Either way, it's up to us to fix it for ourselves.

The carpenter decided to be nailed because it was a Physics Joke.  Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

If a man spends some time hammering nails, eventually someone will hammer him with nails.

Just as some may hit their thumb.  The nails get hit, then the nailer gets nailed!

Every thought word and deed functions thusly.

Thoughts have material existence in another dimension, that is why incarnated people have massive confirmation bias syndrome.

Does erudite Diploid know anyone in particular that has confirmation bias?

I don't even know what I am looking at most of the time.

The beaches are nice though.

Also driving fancy cars way too fast.

I don't even know whose Paradise I am in.

I did see a dead priest friend at the beach.

The weed is really potent in Heaven.

Sometimes they dose me on things I don't know what they are.

I am in another dimension out of my body getting dosed on I don't know.
