Three most important criteria for a good substrate are- cheap,readily available and no preservatives. Try birdseed if you are looking for something you may have at home :smile:.

I've tried corn meal and had no luck, so I don't know it the corn chips would work. Maybe I just screwed up. Brown rice is very cheap, though, so you might want to invest in some. That way you know it will work for sure. Nothing wrong with experimentation, though.
