I saw the recipe on here a few weeks ago and now I can't find it. I've got some whiteflies in my Salvia's and I don't want to use permethrin to kill them. Thanks!

I looked and couldn't find it either...I really think you just need to soak the peppers in water, maybe chop them first (if you chop them i'd filter the plant material out of the solution) then put into one of those spray bottles you can buy at wal-mart. The ammount of pepper you use is yours to experiment with I assume...start out with a mild concentration then make it more potent till it gets the job done.
I also have a qustion of my own, I've heard of using nicotine solutions to get rid of pests, but I don't really feel comfortable with introducing my plants to that chemical, does anyone know any downsides to using nicotine as a pest repellent, or is it basically safe?

Water, a bit of dish soap 1 - 2 tsps, and some cigarettes soaked in the water and diluted to say 1/2, light brown water in color or amber or light amber is perfect. Spray em in mid air and they die, just spray every 2 days, and have a fan going. They'll be dead in no time. Get the soil too, disturb the soil and check the under sides of leaves. Adding some diatomacious earth to the top layer of soil too will do the trick.

Is that 1-2 tsps of soap per gallon of H2O, or just as much as you need to fill a spray bottle? I've got all the stuff ready, I just don't want to make it too strong.

well i don't really follow an exact recipe that was jsut some guesstimation, i normally add some to the spray-bottle directly from the soap bottle. Just enough so that it's there, but not all foamy and shit.

Thanks, I mixed that stuff up and even a little hot pepper too! Hopefully it does the trick for me. This is a picture of my Salvia plants. When I brought them indoors about a month ago I topped them and now they've got bugs in some of the new growth. I didn't notice until yesterday how many whiteflies there really were. I'll just have to keep an eye on them!

Not to split hairs, but the water temp out of the hot faucet far exceeds 100F. Are you sure that's right on the temp to heat the water?

no. that's why I put in the lil' ~ thingy. just "steep" it, like a tea. no boiling necessary.

i soak a pouch of the cheapest leaf chewing tobacco ( redmans, union worker, etc) in a bottle of rubbing alcohol for a week, strain and recover the leafs with water for another week. strain and combines liquids. i add a healthy squirt of dish soap also, then top off to the gallon mark. the iso aclohol helps with eggs and larvae. it breaks down the protective coating, letting the nicotine kill the baby bugs....
never had a problem with this formula

Hate to dig up antique thread, but I had it bookmarked, and I didn't see the point in starting up a new one for a subject already covered.

Anyone know if the menthol in mentholated cigarrettes would have any negative effects on the plant?

hot pepper spray and neem oil are deterants pyrithium(spelled wrong)may kill few but not kill the colony as they breed in the soil. diatomacous earth on the other hand kills them in the soil environment. which means i would use a conjunction of the to. if that doesnt work use diatomacous earth plus bug be gone (these are extreme measures) and rinse the plant off a few times after they are gone to clean it but be sure not to spray so much because it will kill your plant. then rinse it out of the soil. by leaching many times.

I suppose it doesn't necissarily matter now, I've already used them, I forgot to worry about it. So if no one has any comments on the subject, I'll let you know how it goes.

You can get these yellow sticky trap things that just attract the bugs and when they land they are stuck. Saliva plants just totally attract pests, it is really annoying. I used the pepper tatic above and was not effective compared to sticky traps. Yet combining sticky traps + the spray works even better.
