Grow log /Review Midwestgrowkits, Golden Teacher.
    #19762345 - 03/28/14 11:30 PM (10 years, 9 months ago)

Hello and welcome, new account, old poster. As I never had success with growing with my own supplies (Seriously, I did a ryeberry tek and I could only grow fucking bugs.) I have decided to go with a pre-packaged/sterilized grow bag. This will serve as a grow log, and a review. Lets get this log started
                              The Log

March 28th 5' O clock in the afternoon

I have purchased 2 rye grow bags, and a syringe of Golden Teacher spores for "Microscopy purposes only". I hope they will arrive in quick time.

UPDATE: I have purchased two thermometers, one infrared, and one lcd. The LCD thermometer is to test against the ratings of the infrared, which I hope is accurate.

March 31st 2:06 PM

All items have been shipped.

April 4th 3:24
The spores have arrived. I find my spawn bags hurriedly, spraying anti-bacterial with glee I found the sanitation wipes and rubbed them against the black self-healing injector ports per instructions. I took my Golden Teacher syringe and used another sanitation wipe on it, then I flamed the needle and used another wipe. Injecting went a bit faster, I initially planned to repeat the steps after the first, but I thought that taking that time to do it would probably amount to more bacteria.

April 10th 2:14
No signs of growth yet, I have recieved my agar and agar plates, they have been inoculated

                        The Pics

                        The Plan
As the kit comes with two rye spawn bags, both will be held until they are ready to truly start growing. One bag will be left alone, the other will be cased. From here we will be able to see which harbors the better outcome. Wish me luck.

                      The Review
Customer Service: I began my chat with a customer service person about 25 minutes ago. For this category I will give it 5 stars, he answered all of my questions in a timely fashion. They got some smart people over there. If you're reading this, thanks for the help Jake!

Probably unnecessary man.  Heat the room. Not the chamber. If your thermostat is set at 70 then the temperature is probably  about 70.

I've been doing fine for the last 9 months and the only time I bought a thermometer was when I built a massive 35 gallon Tub incubator a-la frank's tek.  For colonizing bags this is really unnecessary.

EDIT: Sorry misread. Are you going to try to fruit in the bag or take it out of the bag and put it in a shotgun fruiting chamber like a big cake? What's the contents of the bag?

Glad to hear your starting to try cultivating again but it might help to know you're whole plan back to front.

Hey I think you have a serious misunderstanding of what a bag of rye is for.  It's not a 'grow bag', it's a 'spawn bag'.  Once the rye is done colonizing you'll need to 'spawn' it to a bulk substrate like horse poop or coconut coir into a monotub fruiting chamber or a tray inside a shotgun fruiting chamber. A 'rye bag' is not an all-in-one growing bag. It's only 1/3rd of the process.

But maybe you already knew that. What is your plan for that colonized rye?

EDIT: You could also case those grains directly in a tray but you'll still need to build a fruiting chamber for them.

All infrared thermometers have to have a tolerance rating in the specs because they're used to tag lab samples \ food stuff \ etc. You probably won't need it, though. And like Tiger said, fruiting straight grains works, but it also kinda sucks for longevity and yield. In for a penny...

Take a look at whats in it for yourself

"Each bag contains 3 pounds of nutrient-enhanced organic rye berries and a mixture of distilled and mineral water fortified with gypsum, diammonium phosphate (a fertilizer/nutrient to provide an adequate amount of nitrogen, and correct PH) and other nutrient enhancing herbs and minerals. Each spawn bag has a built in filter patch for gas exchange and a self-healing injector port for effortless and error proof inoculation. "

With this, I want to be as accurate as possible. If the room is 70 degrees, and the bag is 69 degrees, I want to know it.

It's still gonna need to be mixed with bulk, or cased for best results. Straight grains don't fruit too well...

Really unnecessary to monitor temps that closely my man. Cubes will grow well in a wide range of temps. If you have extreme temps in the grow environment then it's a different story.

Haha your going to have fun with that infrared one.  First one I got I was taking the temp of everything...drinks, bongs,cooking......but you won't need it for shrooms.  Just keep room temps and you'll be fine.

I've not grown for about 2 years now, so while this baby colonizes ill definitely be researching a bit more. But I do have a large plastic tub I can use for fruiting.

The pledge bottle is showing early signs of contamination. You should mist it more often and make sure it's getting a 12/12 light schedule. If it doesn't recover on it's own you can try peroxide but I don't think you have much of a chance of salvaging it.

Best to go out and buy a bottle of Lysol to replace it.

it looks off. how's your hole placement? and hole size?
and I dont really get it, are you asking q's or just starting up and adding pics of your equipment? :tongue2:

EDIT: now I'm really confused. pre-sterilized grain bags and a sgfc? what are you trying to do? trays?
it almost seems like you want to fruit straight grains in the bag in a sgfc. if so, don't.
spawn the grain to a coir+verm substrate and mix it all in a monotub.

This is more of a growlog/review of midwest grow kits, im going to colonize the grain bag, and create a casing layer and let it fruit in the SGFC, im open to comments about EVERYTHING. Should I add more holes?

Since this is more of a review than a grow log, I think im gonna go with Midwest's casing material

Excerpt from their site
"Midwest's Premium Select Bulk Casing is the perfect combination of Coco Coir, Vermiculite, Hydrated Lime, Gypsum, ph buffers, ph stabilizers, mineral water and a few other choice ingredients. Our premium casing comes fully hydrated and pasteurized and is ready to use right out of the bag! Use this along with a fully colonized spawn bag to start your bulk growing experience! Each 5 pound bag comes fully sealed and can be used right away or stored in the fridge/freezer for use up to 3 months later."

well, they don't seem to know what they're talking about IMO.
bulk sub casing mix with bulk sub ingredients to be used as a bulk sub,
but for some mysterious confusing called a "casing".

Lots of people used to call their bulk substrates in trays "casings".
it's really confusing as it has nothing to do with applying a casing layer.

just use that sub mix and mix it up with your colonized spawn in a monotub.
it's a probably the worst thing to use though, considering price, handling, shipping, and the you dont know what the fuck they've done to "properly hydrate and pasteurize" that mix.

buy some verm and coir and just sterilize it or bucket tek it.
much easier and less expensive. will probably work better as well.
but hey, it's your choice

Midwest sucks a fat one. They're a ripoff, for starters. And their information is sub-par. They try to make like they've got "insider info the other guys don't want you to know", but it's a load of shit. I bought a grow kit from them just starting out and didn't realize until a couple weeks later when I found RR's videos that the whole thing was almost completely unnecessary and I could've done it myself, more successfully, for much cheaper.

There's my input, lol.

There spawn bags are working pretty decently, and if it doesn't work I have agar and agar plates coming.

Well, at least their spawn bags aren't contaminated. One thing I can say for them is that the jars in their kit were sterile as promised.

Just a quick question, after I innoc my agar, how long does it take for mycellium growth in the plates?

When I saw it, I was oh so relieved, midwest is pretty expensive + shipping + Syringe + desiccant + Capsule Machine (I hate the taste of mushrooms, and from what I hear, these kind taste about 50 times worse)
And I now go back to watching House MD.

I had two... flame sterilized the needle, wore gloves laced with alcohol... and put alcohol on the needle. I took every goddamn precaution, gonna try again.

you put alcohol on the needle then you flame, putting alcohol after you flame is like putting your hands in the toilet after washing them. Flame = sterile alcohol = sanitary. Just in case you didn't know

I got 8 3lb rye bags goin just checked today day 7 and i have 6 outa 8 so far with growth, i wore mask, gloves(iso'd), sprayed air disinfectant/ sanitizer, rubbed down room with disinfectant and iso, flame sterilized needle, also iso wiped after, then iso wiped self healing patch, and iso wiped patches after for safe measure. Did you sanitize the room itself or use a still air box? I just used a sanitized room with doors closed.

you would be surprised at how still dirty a "sanitized" room is, make a still air box. You can't sanitize yourself and you surely can't sanitize a whole room no matter how much lysol bleach and alcohol you use.

6 jars almost completely white, I constructed a little sgfc, wondering about something though, I've got some chicken wire, I cut it up and placed it in the terrarium. If I keep the cakes suspended can I put water on the bottom to keep it humid?

Allright boys and girls... and tigers. Now on to the main event! One cake is fully colinized, so I set up the grow chamber for it... in about a week it'll be time to see if I did all right. Either way, the rest of the cakes will be fully colonized since my patience is directed towards the one thats growing now.

Man all this talk about not fruiting straight grains.  I just did a few mini take out foil trays with 100% rgs.  Nocced 100% rgs pint jars for spawn.  Put a pint of soaked rgs in the the foil pans, lids on, covered in tinfoil and PCed.  Spawned the pints to the pans, shoved them in gallon size ziploc bags 99.99% zipped closed so I could watch the spawn run.  Thinly cased with perlite at 100% colonization, maybe like an 1/8" and put them in a sterilite tub with a few holes and poly as my FC.

Started with 6 pans, lost 1 after the first flush from trich (tossed it in the compost  at first sign, FC was kind of tight anyway) and ended up pulling 6 ounces from 3 flushes (and just pulled another 163 wet grams from the last when I got back from vacation). It does take lots of misting and I had to water them almost like houseplants, grain as a bulk sub doesn't hold water for shit, but they can be fruited in straight grains.  I guess it was like the Violet rgs tek, except I used slightly bigger containers for fruiting.

I also just made up some spawn bags with a coco/verm/poo bulk sub and a layer of rgs for inoculation.  The plan is for the rgs to get colonized, then mix it in with the bulk, at 100% cut the top and fruit.  Since the bulk was PCed, and I don't have to expose it to spawn the grain to it, I hope it cuts down on chance of a contam.

Same thing with me when I started. I wonder if anyone else experienced this. At the risk of sounding completely loony  I took the dreams as confirmation of the prescence/intelligence/spirit of this wonderful fruit. I almost never remember my dreams which made it all the more striking. Kay, I'm off for a psych eval, catch you later.

Just remember. What you're feeling isn't permanent. The mushrooms won't last forever.

Lol! A week is about right. Maybe a bit slower/faster depending on temps etc.

i sometimes wonder how many ppl who NEVER tripped get into growing.  most ppl i know or that i talk to on here tripped first, then grew later.  its pretty cool ur first psychedelic experience will be from ur own labor.  mine was from shrooms, but not my own.  make sure u have weed....i can't trip if i don't have it.  it can turn a violent storm into a calm sea

kudos to u tho dude!  i have tried so many drugs, good ones, bad ones, and mushrooms is where its at, hands down.  i get into arguments with my buddies all the time about this.  the rewards from a natural trip far outweighs a synthetic one IMHO.  acid is GREAT!  but mushrooms are just....it.

u can order ayahuasca ingredients legally FYI.  thats a great experience too.

I decided to try something out with a cake that may or may not be contaminated, I placed wet dirt in a soda bottle and shoved the "contaminated" cake into it half way, if it is contaminated, no loss, if it isnt, I can probably salvage it later.

All my pins were growing near the bottom and there were about 12 ON the bottom, so I flipped the cakes, new pins, new hopes.

If they're growing at/on the bottom, it's because they prefer the micro climate there.  Maybe your humidity isn't high enough.

I gotta disagree.  For me, Mush is only a substitute for a paper line that dried up.  Until you've had access to unlimited high powered blotter, you don't know convenience and serious powa of a trip.  Throw in some no2 and you have an evening.
