Hey Shroomery! This is a pretty awesome plant that I haven't seen on this forum so I thought I would share!
Quote:
Acmella oleracea (syn. Spilanthes oleracea, S. acmella) is a species of flowering herb in the family Asteraceae. Common names include toothache plant and paracress. In Brazil it is called jambĂș. Its native distribution is unclear, but it is likely derived from a Brazilian Acmella species.[1] It is grown as an ornamental and it is used as a medicinal remedy in various parts of the world. A small, erect plant, it grows quickly and bears gold and red inflorescences. It is frost-sensitive but perennial in warmer climates.

The leaves and flowers of this plant will numb the shit out of your mouth! The effects are very strong and may also cause you to salivate heavily. It's super easy to grow from seed and serves as a beautiful ground cover. My sister was able to grow a ton of it last year! I just started seeds 1-2 weeks ago in coco coir. *** Be careful planting this near other plants, when they come into contact the toothache plant might burn it, that was the case of a poor tomato plant last year
Has anyone else grown this plant?

We have a tree around here (SE Texas), the locals call it an Ironwood Tree (not sure this is correct, that's just what they call it), big knots on the bark with a spine on the knot, also used for toothaches. Usually found around fence lines. Same affects.

interesting I wonder if they share similar chemicals! I also forgot to mention that some people use the flowers in chewing tobacco mixes which sounds like it might be cool to try...

That's the one. About a 1/2 cubic inch square of that bark will make your whole mouth numb and make you spit like crazy. Used to screw with it when we where kids.

Plant em, if they don't grow, you can blame it on old seeds. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. What a deal.

There is another speciecies of Zanthoxylum (Z. rubescens) that makes an MDA-like alkaloid called rubesamide. Never had any luck locating seeds for it though.

I believe my seeds were at least 1 year old and the germinated with no problems at all.

Sounds a lot like Sichuan pepper/prickly ash, in which case I HIGHLY recommend combining small amounts of this stuff with loads of hot pepper in your cooking.

Yeah those are in the Zanthoxylum genus too. The genus is in in the citrus family. Not closely related to the species in the original post though.

I meant the original plant (which is not in the citrus family) might be interesting in Sichuan-type cooking.
