cloned it last season from a massive cluster growing on black walnut. it probably weighted 20 pounds. did some test runs and looks promising as a production strain. fast grower and tasty too.

How's the taste compare to H. erinaceus? Does it still have the shellfish flavour?

it is nice cuz it doest tend to get so waterlogged like erinacius. maybe cuz of its open form. it grows super fast too. it nearly doubled in size in 24 hrs. it is not as heavy though. will see how big it gets and post more pix tomorrow. taste is similiar, mild, crabby....i am judging that from the wild one though, this is the first we have grown so we will see if it tastes different in captivity. happy to share but we are not done experimenting yet and just have this species in a couple of slants. will step it up sometime in april. yes, both eastern hericium species will grow on black walnut. In fact, it is an excellent substrate for h. erinacius log culture
