Pain in my right side... potentially alcohol related
    #19079460 - 11/03/13 09:29 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

To begin this thread, I'd like to say that I'm aware that alcohol carries a myriad of health risks.  So please refrain from a soapbox where point out that alcohol is a liquid evil and then you judge me for drinking and tell me I'm a moron.

The problem: I've been having pain in my right side for several months. There are two types of pains.  One is a feeling of tenderness on the whole right side of my torso, especially right under the ribs.  I also have been experiencing a sharper pain that feels more localized.  The tenderness mainly occurs after I binge drink for two days in a row.  It goes away in about two days.  The localized sharper pain comes and goes... seems to get worse from eating lots of food.  They may be two different issues; may not.

My alcohol use (I assume it's relevant): For the past five years, I have been binge drinking (10+ drinks) most weekends, sometimes twice a weekend.  I take weekends off, for sure.

Current status: On hiatus from drinking; haven't drank for the past few weeks and may not for a while.  Prior to this I had cut back substantially, but I binged two days in a row a few weekends ago and got the tenderness pain.  Currently, I do not have the tenderness, but there is a mild pain that sometimes gets a little bit worse when I eat a lot.

Finally, I have already been to my physician about this months ago.  He suggested that it may be rib cage injury from weightlifting.  At this point, I don't think that's what it is.  When I get better health insurance, I plan on getting a full physical with blood work.  In the meantime, I made this thread.

Thoughts?  Any suggestions as to what it might be?  I've Googled this quite a bit a thought maybe it's liver inflammation.  But also a lot of evidence seems to suggest it may be the gall bladder.  It may be digestive.  It maybe two different things.  I guess I'm interested in seeing if anyone else has experienced this or knows someone who has.

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome, but please spare me judgement; I take responsibility for my actions.

The liver is on the right side under the ribs and affected by alcohol.

Google is a poor substitute for a doctor.

Is it possible you are poking and prodding too much and causing soreness in that area? I used to have a hard time not worrying about pains and bumps and marks, but I've forced myself to not pay attention to things for a while to see if they get better as opposed to just making whatever it is worse by testing it constantly.

Not saying you're a hypochondriac, but if you are, that could be an explanation.

But, lots of stuff happens in that particular area. Your colon starts on that side, and if you say that it happens when you eat a lot, it could be something a simple as gas being stuck up in that corner. I don't know if liver disfunction is something that you would feel until it was fairly advanced, and you might have other symptoms first, such as jaundice. That is just an educated guess, though.

yeah, alcohol causes such a myriad of physical problems, there is no way in hell that it's "guaranteed" to be your gallbladder.

It is very unlikely that you've already developed cirrhosis of the liver, that usually takes (many) years of hard drinking. You would be in some real pain if that were the case, more so than what you've described. My guess is it's something related to your digestion, prolonged alcohol consumption can really wreak havoc on the digestive system.

The bottom line is that none of us are doctors, go get the required tests to assure yourself that this isn't something serious.

that's what the doctors tried to tell me...its your digestion'!no it aint doc my stomach aint on my right side...youll need an ultrasound to see stones,if those aren't present youll need a hydo-scan to test GB functionality..thats the only test that will tell you if yer GB is functioning..i didt have gallstones my gallbladder just wasn't contracting probably due to sludge..it used to hurt to drink my first couple beers then the alcohol would numb the pain.i suffered with this for 4 years until it got so bad I had to go to the hospital..ask yer doctor for a hydo scan...I dealt with flank pain for too long,it really sucks...this was last year and I had been drinking for over 15 years daily..

As I said in the OP, I have every intention of going to the doctor when my new health insurance starts.

15 years daily?  Geez.  I've really only been weekend binging for the past 5 or 6.  Had you curbed your drinking, could you have avoided removal?  I have been abstaining for more than two weeks now and will probably continue to do so.

Did you have to make any dietary changes before removal?  After?

Can you still drink at all?

I quit drinking but started up again and I drink at least a 12 pack of light beer a day
I believe eastern medicine and dietary changes could have saved my GB..my GB was functioning at like 39% when it should be functioning at like 80% extraction rate
no I didn't make any dietary changes..im horrible don't do what I do..if you have gallstones you will need it removed though but youll get percaset!!

I get pain in my liver from binging on the regular. Proper hydration and abstain and no pain for me.

Think about it, it might not be any real lasting damage but if your liver is straining and you are dehydrated then youre definitely going to hurt. Simple.

Besides pain in your side, what other symptoms did you get?

And can you still consume alcohol?  Do you?  I have read that many people get very sick from alcohol consumptions after their gallbladder is removed.

Anon 1, I simply cannot believe this shit. Let me get this straight. You drink a lot, for years, then you develop a pain on your right side, indicating you've probably shot your liver or are most of the way there, and you are STILL concerned if you'll be able to drink more alcohol in the future?

:hahthatsrich: :thisfuckinguy:

Don't ever change man, you're perfect

I am following up on this thread for record-keeping purposes.

The pain in my side persists and I have not drank alcohol since mid-January (over two months abstinence).  It isn't not a chronic or overtly intense pain, but my side noticeably feels off or in pain around half the time.

A few things I do not seem to have mentioned.  The pain in my side flairs up sometimes with cardiovascular exercise, but not always.  The pain sometimes is noticeable when drinking caffeinated beverages.  Not always, and when it is, it is brief.

I have had tests including blood work, urine screening, X-Ray, ultrasound, etc.  Despite these examinations, all tests point towards me being in excellent health.  That is:
  • Complete blood count = normal
  • Metabolic panel = normal
  • Lipid panel = normal
  • Urinalysis = normal
  • Liver = fine
  • Gallbladder = fine, no gallstones
  • Pancreas, spleen, kidneys = fine
  • Physique = still super sexy

The pain doesn't fit in an easy box due to it seemingly being exacerbated by digestive related actions as well as exertion.  The doctor's final suggestion is that is possibly a "stitch."  The beloved and scientifically-unsatisfying answer, a persistent but harmless pain in the side.

I'm not convinced.  The bottom line is, whatever is wrong with me is currently minor enough to not ruin my life or show up on any tests.  A previous poster suggested it may be alcohol-induced gall "sludge," which wouldn't show up on these tests.  I'm going to proceed with caution.

I have learned to establish myself as a non-drinker at this point.  My weekends are considerably more boring, but I feel that it is an overall positive change whether or not it is the root cause of my pain in my side.  Not going to return to my drinking every weekend lifestyle, but I will likely drink on some occasions at various points in the future. And of course monitor my health.

Sounds like you got shit together a bit better. May i ask what your diet is like? It could possibly be caused by eating too much processed food loaded with chemicals but I am no doctor.

My diet is pretty healthy.  I eat whole grains, legumes/nuts, 5+ daily servings of fruit and vegetables, and some meat.  Very few processed foods.

I don't see how many condition would be caused by diet unless I had some weird genetic sensitivity.

I have had periods where I have lower abdominal pain. It will be a variable and sometimes consistent pain that will last a month or two, then it goes away for months or years and then flare up again. This has happened for decades.

I have a similar pain, It sometimes shows up in my rips, and in the spot directly beneath them. I have determined that it is caused or exacerbated by dehydration. I have no idea what it is, but I can usually find relief by downing a decent amount of water when I first feel it coming on. If I drink it after it has started its a bit harder to get over, acetominophen can help as well.

It comes about when I am taking medications that dehydrate, when I have been using an e-cig which dehydrates and when it has been very hot and I have been perspiring a lot. I don't drink too much but alcohol is also dehydrating. Perhaps you have something similar? It took me a few years to pin point dehydration as a cause but its been a lot easier on me since then.
