That sucks. It's ironic how zuckerberg has his panties in a knot about the NSA when he admitted to spying on facebook's first users, and called them idiots.

Well shit, it looks like I might just be getting sony's VR headset then when it comes out. Who knows though, it could be fine. But I'm gonna be pretty upset if they fuck it up, I was pretty excited about this when I first heard about the OR almost a year ago. They probably have some idea that a lot of people that were looking forward to OR are on the fence about this, so maybe they'll take that into consideration and try to go down the same road as the developers were goin down originally.

The NSA is now 1 step Closer to actually being inside your head.
It might be good for sales of the oculus rift systems but I know I just lost all interest in having one. It will probably turn into an online tracking device just like facebook. Give it your full name, address, phone number, likes and dislikes so it can sell your information to advertisers and make sure you aren't breaking any laws.

I feel this is a replay of EA and game studio's. They buy the studio's and people were all happy B/C now thy would have money etc. But soon after the devs are essentially held hostage working extreme hours w/o overtime, and within a short time sold. But they were gutted. All the vision and passion gone, and they were just a shadow of their previous selves. Their core beliefs and vision pummeled by a company looking for money. Plain and simple.

Can someone explain how I am wrong? I want this to be a good thing but I cannot see it happening.

I had high hopes for this thing too. It was open source and got its start through kickstarter, it seemed like it was a good community project. These posts on the oculus site's announcement of the sale are overwhelmingly negative, and ironically the comments are left using a facebook comment system.

They're in it for the head-tracking functionality. My guess is they're looking to build a Google Glass spin-off.
Facebook buys things for their pieces as much as they do to sell the product.

While it may be true, Google has an IMMENSE head start as far as Glass-esque wearables go. They pioneered the thing from the ground up, FB is just jumping in, and hoping they can buy their way to the top. This is why I am not so thrilled with them. They throw money around to get what they want, but that money doesn't grow on trees. They get it from selling ads (read: obtrusive) and possibly even getting cozy with the higher powers (read: Fed)
I like to compare Sony to Google right about now. Back when Sony was in it's prime, it had the money and will to "burn" on ideas that they though would never make it out of R&D. But on the odd occasion that they had the balls to be bold and try something new and revolutionary, it was hailed as such. Google is in much the same position now. They have money to burn, and they can AFFORD to dabble in robotics (read: DARPA), in wearables (Read: Glass,Google watch), in countless other not-financially-viable escapades. Then they release Glass, and it is like WOW. People are surprised that they are the first to bring something like this to the market. Rather that the tech is available on the current market.

Cheers!

On March 25, 2014, the life of Oculus was taken by Facebook for US$2 billion.[9]
Never heard of it until now, but Wikipedia says this^^^^^^

Actually the vast majority of their money came from their IPO.
