Nah. Could work just as good without the lime I guess, but since I needed to soak the chips anyways... Figured it couldn't hurt. I do like experimenting with substrates, but right now I'm just trying to build as much spawn as I can for my outdoor projects. I'll post new pics tomorrow on the thread.

But where I'm really seeing growth is where I dug a trench and dumped a pile of pine needles 5 feet from it, and on buried sticks in a garden near the ovoid bed, neither of which have any sterile work done to it, nor did I inoculate. It likes to run for sure. Right now it looks like a soggy sponge of loam loaded with mycelium and worms and stuff. In the summer it will dry up, and seeding spots adjacent to it, will be quite difficult unless huge amount is colonized in a tub and plopped down.
But the pine needle pile is really moist, and every pine cone buried in this pine needle filled trench has bluing mycelium covering it. Perhaps they are not very nutritious, but during dry wintery conditions head for the needles as a refuge, and will help supply the patch again when the weather is right
Ovoids seem to really like long thin substrates, knotweed, bamboo, grass, pine needle, small sticks, anything long and skinny, especially long skinny and hollow, and they will go to town.

Alright Alan, you convinced me to do a control. Got a bunch of SRA sawdust spawn that's going to chips today. I've got the limed chips still soaking, but I'm getting ready to spawn 4 buckets of un-limed chips now. These chips just had boiling water poured on them, then soaked for 18 hrs. The limed ones got 1 cup of lime to a large trashcan 7/8 of the way full of chips. Letting them sit until 24 hrs, then I'll strain and spawn them later tonight.

This thread has been closed.
Reason: Hunting forum rule:
5. Do not make threads or posts discussing or reporting the weather. This includes complaining about the weather, asking if the current weather is "good for shrooms", or how long to wait after rain fall to go hunting. As a general rule of thumb, if it has rained within the last 1-10 days, and the temperatures are correct for the type of mushroom you're looking for, and the time of year is correct then it is very likely that the mushroom you are looking for is growing.
