Is it not peyote? Not that i've done it myself but they sure look the part.
Tell you what i'll give you my address, you post them to me and i'll test them for you, see if they work or not.

If they are peyote they need a good 15-20 years growing yet before they'll contain any appreciable mescaline. Stick with san pedro until 2025.

Lophophora, not a lookalike (it has hair instead of spikes).

Ummm...No. You can have peyote that is just as strong as any wild 15 year old peyote if you graft it in 2 years. If you grow it from seed in good conditions you can have it in around 5 years. It doesnt take 15-20, it will mature in about 1 year on a graft and 1 year after that it will have almost the identical amount of alkaloids as a wild mature button.

Oh, yes, they may be peyote. But this cactus is far more than 20 years old. It's had dynamite button harvested before.

A friend's cousin pulled that up in south texas and brought it to me. I cut the buttons and planted it. Doubt I'll ever cut buttons from it again, but it is beatiful. That's wood chips for mulch.

holy shit!
not that i'm jealous but you've picked up that from the wild?
that's bad man! mescalito will eat your soul!

it would be a lot better if you have had just cut the buttons off and left the roots where they were, like whoever did  before you uproot it.

He was doing the land a favor, as it was currently in possesion of a schedule I substance and if the cops would have found it they could claim texas as part of the crime and confiscated the whole state.

Seriously though, peyote is endangered in the wild. Shoulda just cut off some buttons and taken em home and left the rest there. And if any were flowering leave the flowering ones with the root.

Once again, a friend's cousin pulled it up and traded it to me for some kind of fungi. I told hime they should cut the buttons off and he said it takes too long and the DEA watches the areas where it grows.

wwwshroom: Your friends cousin is full of shit..

Well..don?t do it again and lets hope it survives..sorry...your friends cousin doesnt do it again...

Not much to do about it now, even if we might think it?s wrong.
Just another thing..if that is a wild specimen that is alot older than it looks. L.Williamsii is a lot smaller in the wild.
You better take care of that baby though..give it everything she wants..like ferts and alot of lights.

peace..

[Yeah.. gardeners are supposed to be happy people]

1. I did not remove the cactus from the wild and wasn't there when it happened. In fact I don't even personally know the guy who physically pulled the plant from the ground as my neighbor's--who is also a friend--cousin got it from someone else who actually pulled it up.

2. I've had the plant for a couple of years, my wife and I nursed it back to health after being pulled out of the ground and hauled around in plastic bag for several days.

3. There's no way in hell I'm entering the peyote fields of south Texas. The DEA watches them constantly. I do know that the guy who actually pulled it up was only able to do so because he works on oil rig in or near the peyote fields.

4. I never would've pulled the whole plant up myself--particularly if I were harvesting buttons. I wouldn't want to carry anything out the field I didn't need. These guys were so stupid they thought one needed to eat the entire cactus so they took the whole cactus.
