Fish air pumps, will the cakes get enough fresh air?

A friend of mine added an aquarium air pump (w/ polyfill filter) to his fruiting chamber after a few failed grow attempts due to cob-web mold. It was his hope that he wouldn't have to expose the cakes to the open (unfiltered) air until it was time to harvest the mushrooms.
Question: Will the pump running three times a day, 20 mins per cycle be enough fresh O2 for his cakes, or will he still have to hand fan?

I am not sure if polyfil is going to keep out contams, especially if the thing is going 24/7. Try putting some h2o2 in the water, or using tyvek or a hepa filter box. Do a search for the poor mans pod. Magash has a nice little setup with the pump inside a filter box.

well i used an air pump for a while... it DOES give a lil bit of air exchange in the terrerium, but ur still gonna have to fan it occasionally if u want best results...yea leave the bubbler on all the time... umm i noticed air tank bubblers take a while to get up to high humidity (in my experience at least)... slower than perlite... in fact, i think im goin back to perlite... no electricity taken up (even tho a bubblers like 10 watts) and i dont mind the fanning, ill be axious to look at them babies eevery day so its not a big deal...
Good Luck my brother, i hope i helped

Ok, hmmmm...."Damn."
I should explain a couple things. First of all my friend wants to move on to Maga's P.M.P. in the future, but he dosen't have any Geolite right now, so he's using perlite. He's also using a healthy dose of H2O2 in every application.
The air pump line is attached to a small plastic bottle cramed with polyfill, another piece of line sealed to the other end of the bottle then enters a 2 liter bottle filled with H2O + H2O2. The air mixes with the solution in the 2 liter, and enters the fruiting chamber right at the top of the perlite layer.
So everyone here agrees that he should leave the pump on all day, and hand fan.
Two more questions....
1) How often should he fan?
2) Will leaving the pump on all day dry the perlite layer? ( Remember he's running the air line thru a 2 liter bottle of water first.)
Thanks for all the help folks.

Well, my freind just checked the cake......Fuckin cob-web mold!
Half the cake was covered with it....He's going to try to recover with lots of fanning, and H2O2, but it's another dark day for mushrooms in Indiana....
All he can think is that he needed more fresh air....If that's not it, than he's at a complete loss. You just wouldn't believe the extremes he went to, to keep this from happening again. "FUCK!!"

Use the H2O2 but try not to fan that cake to much. The cob web will spread faster cause you'll be launching it's spores.

My friend dunked the cake into a 3% solution of H2O2, the cake fizzed for like 20 mins. Now my friend is in the middle of re-cleaning the fruiting chamber. Adding another air line, (the air pump has two exit lines.) Basicly starting all over.
I hope the H2O2 dunk wont hurt things, as I understand it, it will slow fruit onset, but all in all it can only benefit the cake.
To clean the perlite, my friend intends to cook the perlite in a metal pan with foil over the top in a oven set at 500 degrees F. for about an hour or so. Do you folks think that should do it?
Lastly the whole tub will spritzed with a mild solution of blech and water. Including the air lines which were over looked last time.
Any comments would be very helpful...."This sucks balls."

Yeah, it's kicked my friend's ass three times now.
He's working out of an old closet, in an even older home.

did you dilute the peroxide? you can seal your aquarium pump inside a small rubber maid with a hole cut in the side and covered with tyvek etc. if your using perlite/hydroton dont bubble the air thru water as this will make things too humid and you'll get cobweb.....i found this out the hard way.

That is most likely the cause but it could be something else. I believe zero air movement in the room is one of the best defenses against contams. I'm pretty careless when tending my garden but so far I only ran into a contam once, some kind of green mold, probably trich. It appeared on a small casing right after the fourth flush.
