Mycelium or cobweb???
    #1973539 - 10/02/03 05:09 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

Damn , im really worried that some of my jars have cobweb or sometn, but im not sure...Theyre brf cakes and i innoculated them 5 days ago...

One of em, i used approx 2cc and maybe more, started having little spots of white fuzz. Like a little ball of hair. And 1 day later , the fuzz isnt too dark but like 25% of the jar is covered with it...

could it be mycelium ( growing way fast) , or is it cobweb...ill post a pic when my scanner will work

Edit : damn should had posted in the contam forum, no?

This question gets asked alot.

It's almost always mycelium. I've never known it not to be.

I've never seen cobweb in jars, but greem mold starts out white but is very whispy compared to myc.  Mycelium should look like a white sand dollar or a threadlike bloom radiating from a central point, but sometimes starts out a little thin and fuzzy.

A pic would help, but I guess you'll know soon enough.

Just keep an eye on 'em.  Your prolly fine.

actually my fish has come to the conclusion that after like 6 generations of grain to grain cobweb seems to get a foothold.

its really hard to tell you what it is....you'll just have to wait and see.... I will say this tho...once you've seen cobweb and mycelium you will easily be able to tell the difference ....just takes some experience

That looks like web to me. I've had web cover wbs quarts in like 5 days when the other jars are still small spots of mycelium. Cobweb does travel fast in jars. I think its web but just wait and be sure.

PUNK
Hard to say w/ out pics. =( more pics ) let them go for another week before you dump them. sometimes you just need to let them go.maybe what you think is cob is beginning mic. let them go and see. keep them seperate from other jars if you have any. white is good ! ( most times) anything else is bad !

If your substrate is too wet, the conditions become better for growing bacteria instead of mycelium. If you have tapes over the holes you might want to remove them, that will allow it to dry somewhat. Or you could loosen the lid a bit.

And umikko , you mean that i could let air come in the jars, without contamination???

They need some gas exchange. Bacteria favor wet, stale-air environments. Oxygen is toxic to many bacteria. As long as you have the verm filter on top of your substrate, you can pretty safely allow some air in. If you want to be really sure, use a filter on top of the holes/around the lid. Something that permits gas exchange but stops mold spores. I think many here use Tyvek.
( I keep the holes open myself and trust on the verm layer )

Here?s a discussion on the subject:

do you sterilize the coffee filter in the oven like spore print cards or do you just stick em on?
