I don't personally recommend someone going out and looking for mushrooms based on what they read over the net. For this reason, I don't make it a priority at the Shroomery. If someone would like to write someone in addition to what is already up, go for it. Later, Aphex.

I second that. The only "safe" way to learn it is to go out in the field with someone already experienced with identifying them. Words and pictures simply cannot give enough information for you to be sure. The guides we have are comprehensive in their descriptions, but as you can plainly see (I hope) after reading them you still can't confidently go out on your own and do it. Same goes for books.

As I've mentioned I am researching the on the medical side of things, and I'm finding that most cases of poisoning are from misidentification. Even experienced pickers have made fatal mistakes.

Growing may carry a greater legal risk, but weighed against the alternative...it is much easier to *safely* do.
