straw.
    #1972828 - 10/02/03 03:00 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

i've never used pure straw in a bulk substrate mix before. because i can't cook, drain, or generally work with manure indoors, i'm thinking that in these colder months i'll give straw substrates a shot.

i'm planning on preheating the oven to 170, shredding the straw (not sure with what yet), pillowcasing it, putting it in a water bath in the 22 qt pot i have, and sticking it in the oven for 2 hours or so. then i'll drain it for 24 hours or something.

how's that sound?

how does the yeild compare to horse manure? the potency?

any pointers or tips when it comes to straw? anything that you need to think about when using straw that isn't really an issue with poo?

i dunno about the inside-the-oven thing, cause i use a bucket on the stovetop, but that all sounds good. i'd drain for about 4-6 hours, should be long enough to cool down.
soaking the straw in a tub of water for a day before you pasteurise it is recommended, but i wuz too lazy to do that

yield - just as good for me. potency? dunno. they worked ok

....

tuck in ALL the frayed edges. pull out any loose ones. make sure it's well packed - the natural springiness will help it mattress up.
allegedly, straw solo is prone to one big flush then practically nada. dunno if that's supposed to be cos it get's an infection, mebbe. mine flushed about 4 times. i rate straw as high as it goes. the top. you'll love it. straw rocks

well my foaf used a weed eater isnide a big bucket and it shredded it yes....but holy crap was there ALOT of dust, imo it takes a little bit longer, but using a pair of scissors is much better if working indoors and you get a much better finished product.

yep i use big scissors. now that i think of it, tin snips would probably work great.

cut it small into 2-4" pieces unless you get lazy lol.

soaking it first may pick up a tad more moisture but the real benefit is that it allows bad spores to germinate and thus be killed by pasturization. the process at 170* will not kill spores, just living tissue.

i got a bigass bale of hay at agway for like $3. i bet if i keep using it consistantly it would last me years.

straw grows big mushrooms and fast as well. it colonizes fast. im with shirley, im sticking to straw i may never even try dung unless i move to a genus that requires it like panaleous.

yes it does catch cobweb mold easily but that all depends on YOU my friend

I buy my straw from wal-mart and it comes pre-cut into 2-3 inch strips. This makes it some much less tedious to work with. Check your local wal-mart for the stuff.

The Wal-Mart in my town just got the straw bails. I guess I'll have to stock up every Halloween and do simple casings the rest of the year when I run out.

other straw shredding ideas: lawnmower (on concrete) / 'strimmer' (in strong bag) / shears / samurai sword / woodchipper.

I've heard a weed wacker in a metal drum or big can is good.
