ID on a crazy Tremella-like jelly (Gymnosporangium effusum?)
    #19714735 - 03/18/14 06:01 PM (9 years, 11 months ago)

So I was wandering around in the woods today and ran across a very young ?pine? tree waging war with an orange Tremella-like fungi! I've never seen this kind of jelly fungi before and I cant find anything like it in the books i have...

On a still live/standing, very young (no more than 7ft tall) Pine, I think. ( It's not the normal Pinus taeda that are everywhere around me ) 20ft from a flowing creek.

Orange/dull orange

It feels like Jell-o that isn't quite ready yet...if that makes sense. When I touched it, while it was still on the tree, it fell right off and was falling off in chunks on its own also. A slimy/wet feeling. It pretty much just falls apart. Not like the normal Tremellas i find...

Not really sticky. Didn't have a distinctive odor... Thats not it. It feels VERY different than any Tremella I've ever felt or eaten... I didn't taste this one tho.

And also, are Tremella and Dacrymyces synonymous? I see Tremellas are called Yellow Witches Butter and the latter Orange Witches Butter.....

No, that is not Cedrus, please stop calling all sorts of trees cedars, its annoyingly confusing.  Host info will help.

Cedars are Cedrus, they are in the Pinaceae & all the species are native to the mountains of the western Himalayas and the Mediterranean region.  Of course they have true needles, C. deodora is a commonly planted tree in CA & C. libani is planted in front of the capital building in Sacramento.  Art's fungi is on a tree in the Cupressaceae and doesn't have true needles, many trees in that family are called cedars even though that is very confusing...

If someone can tell me what the host is for Art's fungi I will try to identify it, I have some good rust literature to try.  Without host info I would need teliospores and those are probably on a different host at a different time...

Killer info Byrain! I really appreciate all this help!!! I'm going to WallyWorld in a minute and ill stop by my spot on my way back to get some better ID pics for that tree so I can try and key it out. Ill also look up vjp's suggestion before I go. Thanks again guys!!

Oh and I took a little bit of it home yesterday and went to dehydrate it for my herbarium and it was gone when I woke up.... I guess it absorbed into the paper it was on because all that was left were 3 dark orange spots lol.

Actually I think I am wrong, those are teliospores and they are not on a different host in this case, its the pycnia and aecia that are on different hosts.  I'm not sure if this can be identified confidentially without micro past Gymnosporangium as several species are known to occur on Juniperus virginiana, but if I were to guess I would say G. effusum like this.

...I was afraid of that :frown: I did find one of the same trees, only A LOT more mature, with the same orange fungi attacking most of the trunk and lower parts of the tree! Pics aren't the best, had to park my car in the road and run over to it lol.

So, I guess Gymnosporangium effusum is the best I'll get without a scope?
I really appreciate all the help!

Any way you can dry some of it?  It should be a fast one to scope.
