Yes, the point of Parafilm is that it is breathable. LDPE based plastic wraps are also breathable while PVC based plastic wraps are not.

parafilm is wax... from what i can gather, you are simply making narrower rolls of generic plastic wrap. this definately isn't a substitute.

Not wax but it works.
Left this one in too long! Enokie fruiting in 100 MM dish.
Been using it for about 5 years now with no ill effects.

Yes wrap around the tubes, tape on to secure them but I found the tape was not needed, it clings. No you can't PC or boil them sealed, they pop open if you do. I just wrapped the plastic as an extra layer of protection to protect the cultures while in the fridge.
Jam the stopper in dip in isopropol and wrap in plastic tape.
Keeps for months and months.

*Bump*
I just cut some with a hacksaw, seems fine. I wish I had a cleaver but the roll is relatively fine. I wish I had cut a little straighter but having a good knife wouldn't have helped me much with that. Having just installed a few pipes for a washing machine I should be able to cut a roll perfectly straight by now, but apparently I can't.

Old post, but good info.
The 200 sq ft size (66 yards long) Glad wrap is easy to cut through with a serated bread/vegetable knife.
1 1/4" wide rolls work fantastic for petri's.
Goes on easy and seals tight.
Costs about $3 and should last a very long time.
1, 12" wide 66 yd roll will make 8 petri sized rolls. That's 528 yards or 1584 feet of wrap for your petri's.
Parafilm....

I think I'm still on my first roll and I've done quite a few dishes. It's been awesome.

old thread but yep it works great, it's all I use and 0 problems.
glad brand wrap is breathable so it works like parafilm but you cant stretch it as much but you can still stretch it a lot.

This thread has been closed.
Reason: Bumping 4 year old threads for no reason is not the way to start building post count. Don't do it again. Saran wrap sucks and is not a substitute for parafilm. It's not just about gas exchange but pore size and filtering. Parafilm costs a few pennies per petri dish. If that's too expensive, people are in the wrong hobby. RR
