Are you gonna case them Bod?...maybe do a half and half?

Casing will be something like cactus soil/ jiffy mix. Prepared according to Violet's write up with the microwaves and going past field capacity and then tamping down the edges to stop side pins.

thanks, bruv. i haven't decided their fate yet. only got one shotty, and it's not big enough for all three. i do have a bunch more of those tubs, so i was thinking of melting some holes and doing them pseudo dubtub style. although you might notice i neglected to line them. maybe i can rig an aquarium pump and heater to fully automate them, with full on rheostatic humidity control and...
yeah, no.

maybe that was my problem. i gave up and just put the cakes in the shotty on top of some lids. been treating them like pf cakes. side mush was just too frustrating, ugly and messy for my delicate sensibilities. good to know.

It may not be 100%. But there's definitely a large shift towards using the casing layer instead of the side microclimate, and it's not unusual for me to see entirely top fruiting

The other 6 cups for this thread appear to be at 100% I'll let them consolidate for ~10 days likely. Then case them just like I did with this one.

30g dry unprepared RGS was weighed out for each(3 total) small ziplock(16floz) twist pp5 containers.
1 tablespoon of Miracle grow All purpose Plant food was added to one gallon of water and brought to a boil
This fert water was used to hydrate the grains according to violet's grain prep TEK modified for fertilizer use. I used the Flash hydration preparation and thus did a second heat treating in the microwave.
Quote:
"used the flash-hydrate preparation to do the same, you need a second heat treatment. The microwave is perfect for this."
since I only had 90g of dry RGS I used the medium sized ziplock containers 32floz as the bin for the flash hydrate step. I stacked two together to insulate it and used extra water( >3x the volume) for the thermal mass.
after the boiling fert water was poured on the grains they sat for 24 hours. then they were strained
The total mass of hydrated fert grains at this point was 216g. Each of the 3 pp containers recieved 72g of the hydrated fert RGS
after that they were microwaved(@ 1050W) for 7 minutes rotated 180º at the 3:30 mark.
Then I let them sit again for another 24 hours before sterilization.
Then they got sterilized at 15PSI for ~50 minutes
Inoculated the next day with 3 dime sized wedges of an unknown performance isolate.
Shook to hell which made them get to 100% quite quickly, also lots of agar per grains

these are on the flash hydrated RGS with the modified preparation for using fertilizers(don't try this at home ).
Cased with some brand of potting soil prepared with the microwave casing layer TEK. Ingredients : Peat, Horticultural vermiculite, perlite, wetting agent, lime

Wow, those were very lightly loaded. Just 30g per container? Why'd you measure out a specific weight amount per container, instead of loading a specific volume of prepared grains into each container?
Also, I don't like the looks of your "potting soil" It looks like a peat/verm casing mix, very fine. And it looks dry. The potting soil I use has "composted forest products" as a major ingredient. Less of a proportion of peat, definitely not the majority of it as your appears and as many are (especially big name brands, ugh), and certainly No vermiculite. What I consider the best stuff, one should have to sift off bark and sticks, getting it down to the finest components which becomes a very clumpy moist fluffy stuff after the microwave sessions
If you're pouring hot water onto seeds in little thin plastic containers you're not doing a very good preparation. That heat will dissipate quickly, and may not hydrate the seeds a lot - a problem worsened if you microwave them later for a long time with a very loose lid. Try stovetop boiling them twice in stages, or boiling them hard once and briefly straining/tossing if you intend to microwave as the second. Microwaving tends to lose some moisture from the seed, especially if the lid is loose and the microwave time is long like yours was. I typically do it 4-5 minutes, 6 at the most depending on how much the nuke is loaded.
Boiling the grains up to preparation and loading after a brief strain is the simplest way to get great grains. Doing it in two stages (with a day between) is also very simple and leaves them perfect (if not overcooked, in the case of brown rice). Microwaving works well for the 2nd treatment if the grains are assuredly hydrated well, and even if there's a bit of slack moisture.

they are lightly loaded, I've done better with the second time around but I wanted to have good measurements for the performance of them and to see how much they expanded etc...
The casing is only dry, I just woke up and I've had these in my SGFC the whole night so they just got a misting to re-moisten after the picture.
as for the casing mix itself it was the best available at the store. Everything else was name brand with moisture absorbing polymers and other junk. I'll look around I suppose.
the pouring of boiling water onto the seeds in a double insulated container actually held the heater longer than I would have expected in a shallower container with more surface area. The interior container was still too hot to touch more than an hour later either way they seemed to be hydrated just fine. I'll try what you said next time though

i certainly believe you know your shit, violet. the casing i used is pretty much exactly what you told bodhi not to use. frown on me. also, your rice prep explication is spot on for larger scale... thanks for that.
meanwhile, i am puzzled, y'all.
each of my first two tubs has a couple spots in the lower corners where the myc seems to have stopped advancing, while the tops are for sure 100%. but had i lined the tubs, i'd never know it. i feel like i should put them to fruit right now, and pretend i don't know about those corners.
then there's the matter of casing. i have a quart jar of the same CVG used in the tubs. is sterile CVG a suitable casing in this crowd's opinion? is 50/50+ much preferred? should i case and fruit these immediately? case and leave em where they are? thought i had this all under control, now i'm severely second guessing.

So far my best pp5 cased grain flush was 35 g wet. Kind of disappointed. Not doing so well in an sgfc mini mono or 2 liter fruiting chamber. Fruits are all very small. Caps are smallish. Not sure how to improve my conditions. In a closet with a small fan and humidifier keeping temps around 75.

Just a reminder everyone don't get super high off concentrates before doing SAB work

you might loose your scalpel in your grain jar
Also sorry at the lack of interesting updates for this thread. the 6 pp5 cups with the 6 cultures from the dishes for this thread are still just consolidating along.
