Psilocybe cubensis "wild print" pf-tek
    #1971574 - 10/02/03 02:28 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

This will be my 3rd attempt to grow mushrooms. I have been taking spore prints from wild mushrooms that I have found on my hunts. The first two attempts have failed (contams). They were were done with old shrooms, I have been told that shrooms that have been in the field too long can be contaminated. This time I hunted the field after a rain for 3 consecutive nights. I found the freshest shrooms possible. They werent there one day and then next day, there they were.

I took a print from all the shrooms I found that morning. I put glasses cleaned w/alcohol over them and put them in my closet.

Making the syringes.

I filled a medium sized pan 1/2 full of distiled water and boiled for 10min. I turned the water down a little and filled both syringes with boiling water and let set for 2-3min. I flushed the syringes in the sink and refilled with boiling water and let sit. I flushed them once again and refilled, placed in fridge and let cool.

After the syringes were cool I cleaned my kitchen good took a shower and got my ninja suit on.

I took some alcohol and cleaned the counter off with it and sprayed the air with Lysol. I sat my torch, syringes, 91%alcohol, paper towels a shot glass and 2 of the best looking prints on the counter. I wipped the glass w/alcohol, flammed the syringe, wipped it with an alcohol towel and scrapped all the spores from one of the prints into the glass. I squirted 1/2 the syringe into the jar and stirred the sopres up. I then sucked up as much of the water as possible. I shook the syringe and squirted most of the water into the glass and sucked it up again. I thumped the syringe to remove any air and put the cap on. I did 1 print for each syringe that way and put in ziploc bag. They sat for about 18 hours before used.

List of supplies

2 3ml syringes
1 4 quart pressure cooker (10psi)
3 1 pint jars w/lids and holes poked in

PF Tek

850ml Verm
400ml distilled water (aprox)
250ml BRF

The verm/brf mix was placed in the jars leaving room for 1/4in dry verm. I cooked them for 80min. I allowed them to cool for about 12 hours.

INOCULATION Sat, 9-27-03 @ 2am

I placed my unoppened PC, torch, syringes, bleach spray, alcohol and paper towels in this.

It is a 10x16ft tarp wrapped around a hanging light over my table and chair. I put an air purifier in there and sprayed the inside with Lysol. I went to take a shower and shave. I put my ninja suit on, sprayed myself the air and area around the entrance with bleach solution and went inside. Once in Isprayed the air with bleach solution and let it settle. I oppened the PC and lit the torch. I took 1 syringe out and flammed the tip, sucking in a lil air. I then shook the syringe and wipped it off with an alcohol towel. I took one of the jars out and sat it on the table. I carefully removed the foil placing it upside down behind the jar. I placed about 1/4 of the syringe into each hole, replaced the aluminum and sat aside. I did the same for the 2nd jar. I left the 3rd jar empty to see if any contams grow in it.

I placed them here.

I put a little thermometer on top of it. It stays between 83-86degF.

Jar 1

Jar1 is looking GOOD so far

Oct 6 2003 8pm

Jar 1 is still showing fast growth

Oct 11 New Pix

Jar 1 This jar is looking good, fast growth.

Jar 1 There is a little water in the botttom ov the jar. I have tried turning it over to let the dry verm on top soak it up but it didnt work. I hope this doesnt cause any problembs later......

Jar 1 Bottom

Oct 16

Jar 1

Still looking good

Jar 1 bottom

Almost fully colonized

Oct 25

I think the 1st jar is ready for birthing.

Oct 26

I decided to birth the 1st jar. I dug a hole about a quarter wide and about 3in deep to aid in hydration. I then soaked them in the fridge for 6 hours.

I made my birthing chamber out of a plastic pitcher with lid. I places wet perlite in the bottom. The lid with wet verm on top of the perlite. The cake went on the wet verm in the lid.

The pitcher was then placed in the corner of my closet behind a tarp. (same tarp for clean room)

The temp stays around 70degF

Every morning I take the pitcher out of the tarp, take the lid off and fan it out good. Then I palce some plastic wrap over the top and let it sit in the light for about an hour.

Oct 29 8:30am

10-31 New growth

I dont think this is a pin, Im not sure what it is?

I was told this is a pin that started in the jar. It's head started srowing into the mycellium.

I cut it out.

NOV 02 BABY PINS

Nov 3

I have moved the cake into a bigger fruiting chamber.

I am using a trash bag to cover the chamber when I give it light.

Nov 4 Pin growth

This is a close-up of the biggest group.

Nov 05 17 pins

Nov 6

There are 21 pins on my cake so far!!!!!
I see NO sigh of any aborts either!!!

Here are some pix of the pins.

This is ap pix of the first ones to show.

These are some of the newest ones.

These look like two dicks pointing out. I named them John and Ron...;)

Nov 8

I have started misting the container each time I fan. This has helped greatly in the growth of my babies!

I will post more later today.

Nov 9

I picked some of the aborts and one of the ones that popped its veil.

Im gonna let this one mature for a print.

Nov 11

Finally have fruits that I can take spores from!!!!!!!!!

Nov 12

Here is all the shrooms from the first flush. I have a layer of desiccant with 2 papertowels on top of that. The fan gets put on them about 3-9hours per day.

Im hopping that this next flush grows up instead of sideways...lol

I have changed my lighting approach so I hope that helps.

Nov 15

The second flush..

There are several pins growing from the hole I dug!!

This second flush looks to be as big as the first.

Nov 15

There are at least 30 pins on this cake! Im sure some will abort. I may have to find a way to make my gro chamber taller...lol. As long as I can keep them growing up rather than sideways!

Nov 17

Since Fall has tried to settle in here in Arkansas, I have had trouble keeping my temps where they need to be. I have ended up placing 9 jars in the box they came in and placing the box on a heating pad set on high. This has kept the temp at the top of the box around 80degF.

My fruiting chamber had to be covered with aluminium foil to help keep excess light out. I also had to put blankets and pillows around the sides to help stabalize the temps. I have a drop light with a 100w bulb above the chamber to help keep the area warm.

Here is a pix.

It seems that the mycelium generated its own heat. I had to take the box off the heating pad. The temp got to over 100degF!!! I have it setting on the floor of my closet. The temp has remained stable at 80degF since then.

Nov 25

This is what I have found works best for keeping temps right. An electric blanket wrapped around the box with the jars in it, and the droplight placed closer to the fruiting chamber.

Dec 7, 12:30am

I took 3 fully collonized PF jars, dunked them for 30+hours and cased them. I had trouble finding peat moss at the local stores so I had to improvise.

I hope this will work.

When I couldnt find the peat I had decided to case them with straight verm. Before leaving the store I went back to see what else was there. I got some cactus potting soil. The ingredients read "This product is regionally formulated and contains organtic materials derived from: composted forest products, sphagnum peat moss, ground dolomitic limestone (pH adjuster) and sand." I mixed the cactus soil with verm about 60/40 cactus/verm. When I put the water in, the water soaked up completely, without any stiring from me. I thought that was weird. Hopfully it is a good sign.

Once the water content was right, I microwaved the covered glass bowl for 5 minutes and stired. I nuked another 5 minutes and stired. I did it for another 5 minutes and let it cool off.

I crumbled the colonized cakes in ziploc bags.

I cased them into 8.5x3x2in foil loaf pans and placed into my terrium.

I plan on keeping the temps around 80-85degF to finish colonizing. When they are ready I will cold shock and drop the temps in my chamber to 70-75degF.

I hope to have shrooms for the New Year!

Dec 20

All of the casings contaminated!

It took me a while to get it all typed up.

I hope that this time i dont get any contams!

I will post more pix of the jars when I get some more memory.

man, i inoculated my half pints on the 23rd, and they are sucking it up hardcore compared to yours, but my temp is 60 - 68, so that is why, damn having it above 80 makes a huge ass difference no doubt, good job

My first attempt I put the jars on the floor beside the WH. The temp was 70-75degF. The growth was much slower at that temp. It took almost 5 days to show even a little growth.

Jar2 is definately contammed. The light gray will eventually turn green, based on what I've seen so far with my jars.

Good luck with your other jars!

Don't give up trying. You seem to be doing well with your methods. You'll have some great results pretty soon!!

EDIT : Oh!! I didn't notice the second set of pictures of your Jar2. Now it looks much better, that's weird! Well, it may be fine. If you want to be cautious about this one, I suggest you to fruit it in a separate terrarium. I always do that with suspicious jars. I simply cut the top of a 2 liter plastic bottle, add some wet perlite and cover with saran wrap. There's enough space for 1 cake. Contams are so stealth sometimes. I once had a cake that was showing some tiny spots of green and a couple of days later, the mycellium covered the green area so it was looking very healthy. Once it was fully colonized, I chopped this cake in half and notice a massive amounth of green inside the cake. I could have easily decided not looking at my jars every 3-4 days and in no way I could have visually knew it was contammed.. Anyway... good luck!

I have to disagree with fish, it does not look contamed, just looks like thin mycelium. just let it grow for awhile.

Guess I was right about Jar 2 ! Yeah Focus, it could also looks like thin mycellium but the tiny little green spot on October 1st made me think it was contamed.

Anyways, good luck with the remaining jars ninja-niteowl!

Hey Nation...I havent birthed any of these jars yet. I did birth one of my earlier attempts tho.

See the jar on the far left of this pix...

That is the one I birthed. It has been over 6 days and no pins yet. I dunked it in the fridge for about 6 hours then birthed it.
