Sniff, sniff...my friends cactus broke
    #1967984 - 09/30/03 10:38 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

My friend had to move it and it looked like it was leaning a little more than normal.  They left it overnight and when they looked this evening is was laying on the ground.  :frown:

They said they weren't prepared to "do" anything with it, and want to know what their options are.

Also, these spots that are visible cover the remaining cactus.  I posted on here before about them, but no one was able to give much of an answer on how to prevent or cure it.  If anyone has any suggestions...

Those spots start showing up with age and wear and expsoure.

Is that the whole section that broke off?

Yeah that is the whole section that fell off.

Is there any way to replant it? Or will it have to be eaten?

Look at the end where it broken, with a clean sterile knife make a straight cut about 1/2 inch up from the site where it broke, so that way it exposes more surface area for roots later on.

Once cut, put it in a warm sunny place to callous over that end.

Once it's calloused over, about two weeks tops sometimes, dip the end in some rooting hormone, only need a bit, mix up your favorite cactus soil, plant it only as deep as is needed so the cactus can stand up supported by itself in the pot. Water it in and leave it be, water it ever time the top inch or two of soil is dry.

edit: whew! was i drunk or something, my spelling was atrocious.

What will it look like when the callous is complete?

The same thing happened to me just a few days ago, and the pedro I had that broke looks almost exactly like yours except a little taller, it was the one that I posted pictures of when it flowered a while ago. I cut it into two pieces and planted them.
