Reishi or Fomitopsis pinicola in Florida
    #18662666 - 08/05/13 09:35 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I need help with the id of these mushrooms I photographed in Wakulla county Florida in May 2013.

We were hiking through gulf coastal lowlands (Mesic Hammock) about half a mile from the coast. I did not take samples so I can't give detailed info.

There was a Reishi growing from the the ground beneath the tree and my first thought was this was also a Ganoderma but based on another post (here)  I wonder if it is a  Fomitopsis pinicola.

The tree appears to be an old oak with what looks like sap flowing around and through the mushroom.

Thanks for any help!

Not reishi, they've got a stem or foot.

My guess would be red belted.  But I am just an egg.

These conks are quite variable, I gathered a bunch of artist conk thinking it was tinder fungus.  Now I figure I'll have to make wall art with 'em.

Could also be artist conk...  Tho' they tend to be more striate and bumpy in my experience.

See the red belted in the upper right of that last pic?

Thanks for the reply.

Some of your images do look like it but I don't think the Red-belted Polypore gets this far south. I've been wrong before however...

The local reishi sometimes grows without much of a stalk. Here is a picture of one I'm growing now.

Thanks again for the feedback!

It looks like Fomitopsis to me too.

I think I'll go back and take another look.

This time I'll take some KOH with me.  It is reported to turn the flesh red on Fomitopsis pinicola.

I'll report my findings.

Thanks!

Also note that Ganoderma species will bruise brown on the pores.

I went back to site yesterday with 5% KOH.

The fruting body had had several months to mature since my last visit and now does not look much like a Reishi.

The KOH produced black color with a very faint trace of green which does not show well in the photo. The underside of the cap showed the same reaction.

Some web sites say the color should be red for Fomitopsis pinicola but
this site http://www.photomazza.com/?Formitopsis-pinicola says:

Quote:

Reactions : context and tubules become red with the KOH in the young specimens, vinous or black in the ripe or exsiccated ones.

The photographs on that site also show the dark resinous wood surrounding the fruting body that was also visible in my early photographs.

My earlier photo:

I am now suspecting what I assumed to be tree sap flowing through the mushroom is actually an exudate from the mycelium  in the tree.

I have found what I believe to be the exact same mushroom in Gainesville florida..this specimen is a bit older. It was growing on a less than thriving tree that looked identical to the tree pictured above. Very similar to red belted polypore, fomitopsis pinicola but more rounded on the outer edges, stays closer to the tree. Would be very interested to know the exact species, and, if it is safe to decoct as a species, whether or not this particular batch is too old for consumption...
