The importance of carbon for fungal growth, interesting references
    #19559913 - 02/13/14 12:41 AM (10 years, 12 days ago)

I am sure some of this information will be repetitive for some of you folks, but I found it interesting as I still have my mycology training wheels on.

"Carbon appeared to be the limiting nutrient for fungal growth in both an agricultural soil and a forest humus soil."
reference

"This graph illustrates that the use of these carbon sources approximates a bell curve based upon the structural complexity and degree of utilization of the substance."
source

So although a source of carbohydrates is a requirement for fungal growth, it seems possible to really maximize nutrient absorption and fungal growth by providing an ideal source of carbon.

This is really interesting too, maybe the addition of some Acetyl-CoA or CoA to the substrate would have some effect on growth.

Will come back to this later after I consult my micro-biology department and
team of students.

Most of it is sciency, but I find the carbohydrate source stuff really interesting in terms of utilization vs. complexity.
